Nach der Ausrottung in freier Wildbahn überlebte die Art, weil in den kaiserlichen Gärten von Peking eine Herde von 120 Tieren über Jahrhunderte gehegt wurde. Die heutigen Bestände stammen allerdings sämtlich von europäischen Zoohirschen ab. Der einstige Lebensraum des Davidshirsches waren Sumpfgebiete. Seine stark vergrößerten, spreizbaren Klauen sind eine Anpassung an die Umwelt und bewahrten ihn vor dem Einsinken.

Der Forchnerhof liegt in den österreichischen Alpen,. Im Ennstal, zwischen Admont und Liezen. Die erste urkundliche Erwähnung war 1250. Seit 1980 lebt eine kleine Herde von Davidhirschen in einem Gehege in den sumpfigen Ennsauen. Die Tiere kamen aus Woburn, England, wohin die ersten Hirsche um 1880 vom Herzog von Bedford aus China gebracht wurden. Ihr Stammbaum lässt sich also bis auf die letzte chinesische Population vor der Wiederansiedlung in den 1980er Jahren zurückführen.
