This house had been through a lot since it was built in the 19th century. It was moved on the site, expanded several times, converted to a funeral home, then it lay empty for years. We renovated it extensively, and split it into two housing units. Since the house had continuously evolved from the time it was built, we didn't strive to recreate its appearance from any specific date. But we respected its history and took cues from its massing, details, and similar houses in the area.

The site for this house is tucked into a secluded neighborhood in Natick, with a beautiful view to a lake across the street. The house is a slightly rustic take on the shingle and arts and crafts styles, with a stone fireplace and fir casings throughout the interior. The plan is carefully organized so the rooms relate to each other appropriately and provide distinct views to different facets of the beautiful site. 49 LINDEN STREET ARLINGTON, MA 02476.

This house sits on a wooded site on Martha's Vineyard. Its overall shape is simple to keep costs under control, but it is detailed with care to make a stately impression. Inside it is wide open. The living room and dining room form one large double height space at the center of the house. There are private bedrooms on the first and second floor, as well as a large open loft that overlooks the public rooms below. 49 LINDEN STREET ARLINGTON, MA 02476.

Perched on a bluff overlooking the ocean, this house was essentially a gray masonry cube. We reorganized and renovated the interior, bringing in new finishes that set the original materials in a new context. What was stark became sophisticated. The master bedroom on the top floor has a balcony overlooking the living room below. A sliding wall at the balcony can be closed for privacy or opened allowing views down to the public spaces and to the site beyond. 49 LINDEN STREET ARLINGTON, MA 02476.

This existing house sat on a beautiful site with views to the ocean, but it couldn't fit the owners' growing family. We added a master suite on a new second floor, made to look as if it had always been part of the house. We revised the top floor of the barn-like volume at the other end of the house, creating a sun-filled living/dining/kitchen area for guests. We converted a garage to a breezeway with enormous glass doors on front and back, offering a view right through the house to the ocean beyond.
