Devon’s ‘red county’ description is attributed to the local red soils which are restricted to this region of the county. The New Red Sandstone deposits, up to 1100m thick, were laid throughout the Permian period, from 280 million years ago (shortly after the granite intrusion of Dartmoor) to the beginning of the Triassic period some 240 million years ago. Many rare species have been recorded over the years, many burrowing into the soft sandy substrate to breed, including pre-1970 records of the UK BAP species Lasioglossum pauperatum. Dawlish Warren Bird List. This list includes all species reported from Dawlish Warren NNR and surrounding recording area. The NNR covers some 210 hectares [505 acres] however, only c.35% of this consists of terrestrial habitats. The sandspit from Langstone Rock at its Western end to the end of Warren point is only 2.25 kilometres long [1.4 miles] and roughly 0.4 kilometres wide [0.25 miles]. Wader numbers had dropped overnight but new arrivals in the estuary included a juvenile Little Gull. A Little Ringed Plover. As well as the first Wigeon. Of the autumn. Counts included 522 Curlew. And four Grey Plover. Also in the estuary 40 Sandwich. And three Little Tern. Elsewhere passerine migrants had also departed overnight with just two Willow Warbler. On site, single Yellow. And a Garden Warbler.
