Dawn on Mars: August 2013
http://dawnonmars.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html
My adventures as a science team member on Curiosity, NASA's Mars Science Laboratory. Sunday, August 25, 2013. Curiosity in 3D in KeckCAVES! This video is in 3D, filmed using KeckCAVES. CAD model of Curiosity. This is super cool, but my real dream is to have an animated Curiosity (e.g. turning wheels, pointing cameras, moving arm, etc.) to walk around with through Gale Crater and up the slopes of Mt. Sharp. Saturday, August 24, 2013. Curiosity Update - On our way to Mt. Sharp with a bit of mudstone. For m...

Geologize: Geologic Cross Sections and Adobe Illustrator
http://geo.distortions.net/2011/02/vertical-exaggeration-in-profiles.html
I'm a Geologist from UC Davis. I'm most interested in finding modern solutions to any geological problem. That means evaluating and embracing technologies. and sometimes being a code-warrior. Let's modernize geology! Wednesday, February 23, 2011. Geologic Cross Sections and Adobe Illustrator. Last academic quarter, I spent time trying to understand how to easily remove vertical exaggeration (VE) from tabulated elevation and distance data in Adobe Illustrator. Perhaps you have found a better way? Select y...

Dawn on Mars: August 2012

My adventures as a science team member on Curiosity, NASA's Mars Science Laboratory. Thursday, August 23, 2012. Today was a great day. It was the first of four sols (martian days) that I am assigned to the tactical Long Term Planner (LTP) role, which means I attend meetings and am generally responsible for communicating LTP decisions to the relevant people. We knew it was right when each person we consulted provided more insights that supported the new plan rather than requiring changes. Whew! 2) did som...

Dawn's Sed Strat Lecture Notes: January 2013
http://dawnssedstrat.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Dawn's Sed Strat Lecture Notes. This blog includes my lecture notes for sedimentology and stratigraphy related classes. The focus right now is on UCDavis GEL109. Wednesday, January 30, 2013. Once sediment is produced by weathering, it is available for transport. The two main forces in erosion are fluid flow and gravity. Think about dumping a truck load of fine sand into a fast moving river, it takes time to move all that sediment even if the flow speed is theoretically fast enough to erode fine sand.

Carbonates - A very brief introduction. Is more abundant in seawater than CO. The actual reaction that takes place is:. The = means the reaction can go either way. If it goes from left to right, calcium carbonate minerals - calcite or aragonite - form. If it goes to the left, calcium carbonate minerals dissolve....Produ...

My adventures as a science team member on Curiosity, NASA's Mars Science Laboratory. Tuesday, July 31, 2012. Okay, so William Shatner is my favorite narrator! Just watch this video! It doesn't get any better, ever! Except maybe his recital of Sara Palin's speech.) Maybe Wil Wheaton. Is pretty good, too! I suspect those of you at UCDavis are particularly fond of Shatner, having rubbed elbows with him at the transit of Venus so recently! And then there's the rest of us:. And " Mars in a Minute. Just to put...

Here is an outline of how to approach interpreting the depositional environment represented by a stratigraphic column. Step 1: Look for sedimentary structures that are characteristic of a specific environment or process.
