The History of Oxford University Press… | part-time musings

The History of Oxford University Press…. Five years since I started working on the History of Oxford University Press project, and here it is (well, volume three of the four). And it’s a handsome thing if I may say so myself – beautifully illustrated and (ahem) so well written. December 2, 2013. History of Oxford University Press. Qadaffi: My part in his downfall | part-time musings
https://dawnnell.wordpress.com/2013/11/23/qadaffi-my-part-in-his-downfall
Qadaffi: My part in his downfall. Before you get too excited, no I wasn’t flying sorties over the Libyan desert. In fact the title is something of a dig at the propensity for academic and journalistic bandwagon-hopping as I reflect on the way in which the hot craziness of the world played out across the cool pages of academic publishing in the last year or so. Asset-stripping (not asset stripping). War on Terror / war on terror (follow author’s use). Great Lakes region (not Great Lakes Region). You are c...

July 19, 2012. Music to watch revolutions go by…. A journo currently working in exciting times in Mali introduced me to this epically cool. July 18, 2012. Picture from Incredible Edible, Todmorden. I’m such a huge fan of the idea of ‘propaganda gardens’ and I love what these guys and gals are doing in Todmorden. Because it’s relatively easy for people to get involved by giving their time or donating tools, compost or plants etc. Talk about grassroots. June 25, 2012. Mystery murgh makhni recipe…. 1/4 teas...

A short story…. Among the books in my study is a small, unattractive book that’s been largely forgotten, but which played a not insignificant part in South African publishing history. I’m fond of this book and mention it briefly in. The History of Oxford University Press. But I didn’t have the space there to really elaborate any of the detail. So here, dear reader, is the story of E.R. Seary’s. South African Short Stories. First let’s deal with the dust jacket illustration. Not very attractive is it?

Random Reflections: Moving Times?
http://somerandomreflections.blogspot.com/2013/03/moving-times.html
Sunday, March 17, 2013. So… we’ve been looking for a house. With a mixed amount of enthusiasm. We looked at a few in February – the first day we looked at five, one of which we really liked. The other houses were a lot of money for run down or just not terribly nice houses. Then we saw another one last weekend. It was ok, but again, a lot of money for a house that needed a fair bit of work (the current owners had seven children in a three bedroom house). I could definitely imagine living there. I was bor...

Random Reflections: Moments
http://somerandomreflections.blogspot.com/2013/07/moments.html
Monday, July 08, 2013. It’s been a while. Lots has happened, but also nothing. We haven’t moved house as someone in the chain died. We have no idea when the move will be on the cards again. Anyway, I have been continuing to listen to Desert Island Discs and was interested in an observation from Hugh Laurie a couple of weeks ago. I hope everything is resolving itself with the house move. Wow, havent been in blogland myself for ages and decided to pop in tonight. Hope you are well. View my complete profile.

Random Reflections: Summing Up
http://somerandomreflections.blogspot.com/2013/03/summing-up.html
Thursday, March 14, 2013. I have come to the conclusion that I really like Desert Island Discs. Except that I prefer listening to it as a podcast because I don’t particularly like listening to the music choices. That is probably odd, but it is indeed true. On the podcasts they can only play small snippets of the music, so I much prefer it. Kirsty Young is a really good interviewer and I like finding out about the people featured on the programme. Just not their taste in music. And requires people to turn...

Random Reflections: November 2012
http://somerandomreflections.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, November 29, 2012. If you live in England or Wales you can look up local eateries here. And see how they did when they had a food safety inspection. I was appalled by the ratings for some of the places near where I live. Some of the places where I have eaten will not be receiving my custom any more…. A few of my local restaurants received a score of 1. I suppose at least they didn’t get a 0. You can also check for Scotland. I am wondering how the kitchen areas where I work would be rated. Tales...

Random Reflections: May 2012
http://somerandomreflections.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Sunday, May 27, 2012. Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma - which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of other's opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary. Friday, May 25, 2012. Time is free, but it's priceless. Some days I start work at 7am…). I sent th...

Random Reflections: Access
http://somerandomreflections.blogspot.com/2013/02/access.html
Saturday, February 23, 2013. It was G’s 40. Birthday a few days ago. After much effort, G found a restaurant that was wheelchair accessible. One of G’s friends coming to the meal has been in a wheelchair for about a year and has had a few bad experiences. A lot of restaurants that are listed as wheelchair accessible have self-declared themselves as such. Let’s consider further:. Q: Are you wheelchair accessible? But hang on… you might just want to ask a couple more questions…. All the answers were as hop...

Tuesday, January 22, 2013. Looking for that special something for the little lady in your life? Well look no further than here. Do remember to read the comments on Amazon for some important customer feedback. Saturday, January 19, 2013. Despite wondering whether we would spend most of the time in darkness while we were there, it was actually fine – although the sun didn’t rise until about 10.30am. Reykjavik is a very nice city and the landscape is really interesting. That is an almost pointless story.

Random Reflections: Christmas Cheer
http://somerandomreflections.blogspot.com/2012/12/christmas-cheer.html
Saturday, December 22, 2012. I have finally finished for Christmas. I haven’t had a week or more off work since April. I am now off work for three weeks and during that time we are going to Scotland for a few days (not exactly a holiday…) and to Iceland (the country, not the supermarket). Battles continue with the freeholder about us taking over the management of where we live. The freeholder and her husband currently seem to be taking a good cop/ bad cop approach with us. I was born at a very young age ...
