Don't Believe Acronyms!: May 2011

http://dbaoraclestuff.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html

Another DBA blog in the blogosphere. Odds and sods about Oracle administration. Friday, 27 May 2011. Our production databases are backed up with one of two schedules. Most days our backups are sent offsite and retained for 3 months before being returned. But on the last Sunday of each month, our backups are archived for a longer period of time. Therefore the RMAN backups and Veritas catalogs need to be retained for up to 7 years! Us Linux DBAs love cron. We have a simple script called islastsunday. Check...

Don't Believe Acronyms!: July 2010

http://dbaoraclestuff.blogspot.com/2010_07_01_archive.html

Another DBA blog in the blogosphere. Odds and sods about Oracle administration. Thursday, 15 July 2010. We've been working on a data archiving project to move old data from the production schema in one database into an archive schema in a different tablespace, on a remote server. We copy data from a production table (let's call it PROD.FINANCE TAB. Into a pre-existing table in an archive schema (e.g. ARCH.FINANCE TAB. If PROD.FINANCE TAB. This is cumbersome, but at least shows you what the differences ar...

Don't Believe Acronyms!: October 2012

http://dbaoraclestuff.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

Another DBA blog in the blogosphere. Odds and sods about Oracle administration. Wednesday, 24 October 2012. NOT NULL vs. Check Constraints. I found Jonathan Lewis's excellent article about "incorrectly" defining NOT NULL columns some time ago. You can read his article at http:/ jonathanlewis.wordpress.com/2010/09/05/not-null/. Here's the query I used to find the 'guilty' columns:. From any other check conditions in the query. Links to this post. Monday, 15 October 2012. Part of our testing mechanism is t...

Don't Believe Acronyms!: March 2011

http://dbaoraclestuff.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html

Another DBA blog in the blogosphere. Odds and sods about Oracle administration. Monday, 28 March 2011. When is DDL not DDL? If you ever thought that the LAST DDL TIME on a table only. Tells you the last time that DDL was performed directly. Upon that table, then think again. We recently noticed some tables which appeared to have been recently changed, yet we couldn't find any related DDL changes. Could it be that rebuilding an index resets the LAST DDL TIME for the index's table? SQL select object name,.

Now What Happens?: Miley Cyrus Twerking

http://nowwhathappens.blogspot.com/2013/08/miley-cyrus-twerking.html

Gibberings of a modern idiot. Wednesday, 28 August 2013. Not 100% sure what all the fuss is about. Having watched the video of Miley Cyrus's performance at the VMAs and the "twerking" which caused so much outrage, I found that I was just bored. Ms Cyrus wasn't doing anything that Madonna hadn't done before. Christina Aquilera and Britney Spears. Lady Gaga. All of them have pushed the boundaries of what's acceptable to see on stage during a pop performance. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Now What Happens?: A Little Socialist

http://nowwhathappens.blogspot.com/2012/06/little-socialist.html

Gibberings of a modern idiot. Wednesday, 13 June 2012. In this country we drive on the left. Trains go on the left too. When you're walking through the London Underground there are signs everywhere telling you to 'Keep Left'. I am a good Pavlov's dog and this conditioning has been burned into my brain. Keep left in crowded places to make it easier for yourself and everyone around you. Other people are such idiots! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). My Entire Life History In Ten Seconds.

Now What Happens?: Heavy Medal

http://nowwhathappens.blogspot.com/2012/07/heavy-medal.html

Gibberings of a modern idiot. Thursday, 5 July 2012. My workplace is holding a competition to predict the final medal tally for Team GB in the Olympics. I've recorded my prediction (well, guess) below so I can keep track. It's sobering to realise that UK Sport's official target is only 1 higher than the Beijing games. Now What Happens?: T'Apprentice

http://nowwhathappens.blogspot.com/2014/10/tapprentice.html

Gibberings of a modern idiot. Friday, 24 October 2014. Yes T'Apprentice, as we call it in our house. As if it's a Northern thing. Why? Who knows. We also invent stories about the life of the mysterious receptionist who sends the candidates into the boardroom with a cheery "Lord Sugar will see you now". And what sort of receptionist has incredibly complicated project management Gantt charts open on their PC. It's almost as if it was just an actress with a prop. Let's break it down:. 1 The task itself.

Now What Happens?: Sunroof

http://nowwhathappens.blogspot.com/2014/09/sunroof.html

Gibberings of a modern idiot. Wednesday, 10 September 2014. So, it's been a while! I'm posting now as we wanted to share a photo of our 2nd son, Kasper, being born. He was delivered by c-section, so if you're squeamish, you might not. Want to scroll down to see the picture. But we think it's rather beautiful. Typing a bit more here, so there's some space used up. Here it is - the moment of birth. Watching the birth of a human being is a privileged experience so thank you for sharing :0) x.

Now What Happens?: The Dangers Lurking in our Food!

http://nowwhathappens.blogspot.com/2015/02/the-dangers-lurking-in-our-food.html

Gibberings of a modern idiot. Wednesday, 11 February 2015. The Dangers Lurking in our Food! We are all told that we need to cut down on salt, from time to time. But no-one ever tells the TRUTH about salt. It is one of the most poisonous substances known to man. Salt (or NaCl) is made from Sodium and Chlorine. Two deadly poisons, yet the government, and "big pharma", only caring about profits, want us to put them into our bodies, with no concern to the damage it is doing. What a load of bollocks. Ever...

Now What Happens?: Popping Up

http://nowwhathappens.blogspot.com/2012/06/well-heres-thing.html

Gibberings of a modern idiot. Saturday, 2 June 2012. Well, here's the thing. When I said "see you in 6 months" in my last post, I didn't actually mean it. So here we are five months later! Zachary is now almost 10 months old (in two days time) which really accounts for my lack of activity here. When I sum up what's happened since I last posted, it's very simple:. I'm currently rehearsing for RAODS. Production of Alan Bennett's Habeas Corpus. Get your tickets soon. At The Lights in Andover.

Now What Happens?: The Next Day - David Bowie

http://nowwhathappens.blogspot.com/2013/05/the-next-day-david-bowie.html

Gibberings of a modern idiot. Tuesday, 28 May 2013. The Next Day - David Bowie. Watching the superb "Five Years" documentary on BBC2 the other night, I realised that I hadn't yet listened to David Bowie. S new album, The Next Day. So, here's a quick first listen review! The cover itself is a re-working of the classic "Heroes" cover. But can the contents get close to that great album? Title track The Next Day. Is a straight-forward rocker, which hooks you in with repeated listens. Where Are We Now? From l...

Now What Happens?: Dad

http://nowwhathappens.blogspot.com/2015/01/dad.html

Gibberings of a modern idiot. Friday, 2 January 2015. 356 days ago, my Dad had a catastrophic stroke. We didn't think he would make it past the first week, but somehow he did. However, the incident left him severely mentally and physically disabled. He spent the rest of 2014 in a nursing home, where he was well looked after. Two days ago, on New Year's Day, after a short illness, Dad finally passed away. We knew that when the end came it would be a shock, and we would be terribly sad. And so it proved.
