Thursday, June 22, 2006. Cambridge Churches II: Round Church, All Saints, St. Giles, St. Peters. Pictured here, is one of only 4 round churches in England. It is modeled after the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Here's the dome. Even though it is much smaller than other domes we've seen in many churches, it is still striking architecturally. The round Romanesque arches indicate how ancient this church is. The bases of the hammer beams were fitted with these beautiful carved angels. This gorgeo...

Tuesday, June 20, 2006. Cambridge Colleges Picturebook, X: Christ's, Homerton, Hughes Hall. Was founded in 1505, under the patronage of Lady Margaret Beaufort (mother of Henry VII). She also founded St. John's College. The coat of arms atop the main gate is very similar to that at St. John's. The statue here, though, is of Lady Margaret Beaufort. Wednesday, May 31, 2006. Warwick Castle and Stratford-Upon-Avon. We planned another very busy trip, this time for Sara, Keith, and Tom. On Monday, we left early and drove to Warwick Castle. The first castle on this site was built in about 1064 at the command of William the Conqueror. Over the next 400 years it was rebuilt and expanded to what it is today.
