Violet Sky: 2/1/15 - 3/1/15
http://violetsky-wwwblogger.blogspot.com/2015_02_01_archive.html
Sunday, February 22, 2015. Year of the Ram. Perhaps I was a little too optimistic in expecting to see more Year of the Sheep/Goat/Ram stamps. I've not yet received any from China or Taiwan. so the only ones I have are the Canadian ones I bought. And this year brings another design by. Hélène L’Heureux with an illustration by Susan Scott and calligraphy by Ngan Siu-Mui. I think I managed to get a photo that shows off the embossing. Which makes the 2003 stamp look very smooth, and almost plain in comparison.

Violet Sky: junk art
http://violetsky-wwwblogger.blogspot.com/2015/07/junk-art.html
Monday, July 27, 2015. This house near the Public Market in Rochester is almost a destination in itself. It's a bit difficult to describe - and almost as difficult to photograph well. But we met the owner as we were walking around the corner lot and he invited us in and walked us around his filled to the brim yard telling us the stories of everything in it. An original 'mailbox' for junk mail, which it seems the mail carrier uses! The place is owned by artist Antoni Eckmair. Ask about it. Actually, h...

Sunday, November 30, 2014. Birds is the theme for Sunday Stamps. This week. In all honesty, I could probably post bird stamps every week for a year and still not have shown my whole collection. Maybe because I keep collecting them. Anyway, these little songbirds are the only ones from the series I have (though I'm sure I have a bluebird somewhere). I need to get more postcards from the US. And then there are these posing parrots from Australia. From L to R we have the. With the blue face. In 1849 he also...

Violet Sky: a view with the falcons
http://violetsky-wwwblogger.blogspot.com/2015/07/a-view-with-falcons.html
Tuesday, July 14, 2015. A view with the falcons. Falconwatch is winding down. I've been one of several volunteers keeping an eye on the new family of peregrine falcons in downtown Hamilton (see this post. Below are some screen shots from the webcam. I had a chance to go up to the 24th floor of the Stelco Tower, where the falconwatch co-ordinator sits for an in-the-sky view of the birds. The views out over the city are spectacular. Although, it is true that Hamilton is not the most beautiful of cities).

Violet Sky: 4/1/15 - 5/1/15

Monday, April 27, 2015. Yesterday was the last day for the Vanishing Ice exhibit at the McMichael Gallery in Kleinburg, so three of us made the excursion for a day's outing. You couldn't take photos of the exhibit - which really was a blessing - and anyway, there are examples of the pictures on their website which you can see here. It was dismaying to see this huge crane, but a little consoling to see this sign which shows that the two older buildings are to be incorporated into the development design.

Violet Sky: wishes and dreams
http://violetsky-wwwblogger.blogspot.com/2015/08/wishes-and-dreams.html
Tuesday, August 4, 2015. On a whim, I decided to go to Hendrie Park at the Royal Botanical Gardens. There is a nice tea house and I thought I'd get a few Postcrossing postcards written while enjoying the flowers. I've no idea how I managed this picture with so few people in the way. Because I'd forgotten that it was Enchanted Garden Weekend. And the place was brimming with fairies, gnomes and pixies. And not just young ones, either, as these ladies proved to be young at heart and spirit! And next summer ...

Violet Sky: black and white and red all over
http://violetsky-wwwblogger.blogspot.com/2015/08/black-and-white-and-red-all-over.html
Sunday, August 2, 2015. Black and white and red all over. Both of these low value definitive stamps were issued in 1988 and designed by Peter Adam. And both of these animals have adjusted quite nicely for living in the city. One is sleek and graceful, and one waddles awkwardly and usually has his nose in the ground. Both animals are nocturnal and red foxes like to eat smaller animals such as voles, mice and rabbits. Of which we have many thousands). Of which we have many thousands). The crazy part was I ...

Violet Sky: create
http://violetsky-wwwblogger.blogspot.com/2015/07/create.html
Wednesday, July 22, 2015. After several trips driving back and forth past an old armoury, a school and a church searching for the location of a mural-in-progress, we finally found it. It didn't make sense to me to drive around the back, but what do I know. Turns out the 'school' is now apartments for artists. Click to see info) and behind that is a studio. And at the back of that is where we found the Swiss- based muralists. Creating their work for Rochester's Wall Therapy mural project. Yes, they do!

Violet Sky: seen everywhere
http://violetsky-wwwblogger.blogspot.com/2015/07/seen-everywhere.html
Sunday, July 19, 2015. This isn't the prettiest of butterfly stamps, but I was intrigued by the 'koolwitje', which translates to 'cabbage white'. Even though this fellow is most definitely yellow. And might they be engaging in some mating activity? According to the English wikipedia entry,. It is widespread and populations are found across Europe. It has also been accidentally introduced to North America. The species has a natural range across Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Another strong flyer is the M...

Sunday, December 28, 2014. Please look after this bear. So, here it is my second challenge for Sunday Stamps. And I found it rather difficult to come with something! My own Paddington Bear wears a brown coat and has yellow wellies and an orange hat. he stands 18. Tall and isn't really much fun to play with, but he is adored none-the-less. And we are eagerly awaiting the movie. Which doesn't come out here until mid January, 2015. But, back to the stamps - the one on the right. If anyone is interested!
