Martin's Moths: Yawn
http://martinsmoths.blogspot.com/2015/08/yawn.html
A tale of moths and men. Moths and butterflies - the difference. How to catch (but not kill) moths. WHAT MOTH IS THAT? Saturday, 1 August 2015. The grey, brown, mostly smallish moths have returned to mock me after a few weeks of cheerier arrivals in the trap. They do give me the chance, however, to show how different examples of the same species can be in terms of superficial appearance. The ones above, for example, are all Shuttle-shaped Darts; the ones below are both Dark Arches. Ben Sale's blog (Essex).

Martin's Moths: May 2015

A tale of moths and men. Moths and butterflies - the difference. How to catch (but not kill) moths. WHAT MOTH IS THAT? Sunday, 31 May 2015. Not such a bad May, after all. The last night of the month brought three new arrivals and took the species tally for May to a much higher level than I had been expecting. Rather a lot of cold and wet weather has left the moth-fancying world - that notable fraternity and sorority - feeling a bit grumpy and dissatisfied. But in my case, without real reason. This is a v...

Martin's Moths: A Tussocky shade of pale

A tale of moths and men. Moths and butterflies - the difference. How to catch (but not kill) moths. WHAT MOTH IS THAT? Friday, 22 May 2015. A Tussocky shade of pale. I'm rather late in reporting today. Retirement life seems busier than when I was working. At all events, it was a great relief when I turned the lamp on this evening and the electrics gave their familiar hum. I'd been worried that I might have broken the bulb when I went to inspect the trap this morning. The reason? As ever, I have a number ...

Martin's Moths: Cover girl (or boy)
http://martinsmoths.blogspot.com/2015/08/cover-girl-or-boy.html
A tale of moths and men. Moths and butterflies - the difference. How to catch (but not kill) moths. WHAT MOTH IS THAT? Saturday, 8 August 2015. Cover girl (or boy). Not this time. As you will perhaps agree from the first three, size needn't matter. In order they are - to the best of my belief - Pammene aurita. Interesting material for a Latin discussion in those names; I will return to the subject) and Carcina quercana. I think you first three are likely correct, for the others I would personally go:.

Martin's Moths: March 2015
http://martinsmoths.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
A tale of moths and men. Moths and butterflies - the difference. How to catch (but not kill) moths. WHAT MOTH IS THAT? Wednesday, 4 March 2015. I am quite enjoying my trapless life because of the premium it places on scouting for moths at other, less powerful sources of light. Here is my latest trophy, a Grey Shoulder-knot which has over-wintered and was out last night out savouring the chilly delights of March 2015. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Some other mothy(ish) websites. Ben Sale's blog (Essex).

Martin's Moths: February 2015

A tale of moths and men. Moths and butterflies - the difference. How to catch (but not kill) moths. WHAT MOTH IS THAT? Wednesday, 25 February 2015. I'm afraid that my moth lethargy continues for the time being, with my trap bulb broken and rather a lot of other projects on the go. But Penny enlivened our cosy evening tonight with a cry of "Moth! And there on the kitchen window - outside- was my very first record for 2015: a Dotted Border. Monday, 16 February 2015. All quiet on the moth-ern front. For a n...

MIDLANDS BIRDER: March 2015- Alpine Swift, YBW & RND
http://midlandsbirder.blogspot.com/2015/06/march-2015-alpine-swift-ybw-rnd.html
Wednesday, 24 June 2015. March 2015- Alpine Swift, YBW and RND. A lot of uninspiring 'patchworking' of multiple sites was very similar to the latter of last month. A Little Grebe. Remained on Patch on 1st. It was brightened up with a very unexpected site first at Parkes Hall Reservoir on 4th though, when a drake Shelduck. Was present. Something I didn't expect at all while heading out for an evening walk! It wasn't exactly far to Ashleworth Ham from here, and with the sporadic appearances of a drake Gree...

MIDLANDS BIRDER: October 2014
http://midlandsbirder.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 28 October 2014. Usually when I go looking for Butterflies I like the solitary aspect, and I spent many hours this year walking around and stalking these dainty beauties. However, I was approached by a friend from Hereford saying there was an open day at Grafton Wood and wondered if I wanted to go. As a site I have never previously visited, a guided walk seemed the more sensible option. A large crowd had developed, and lots of familiar faces started to emerge from the crowd! Was flitting about i...

Martin's Moths: Ragbag
http://martinsmoths.blogspot.com/2015/08/ragbag.html
A tale of moths and men. Moths and butterflies - the difference. How to catch (but not kill) moths. WHAT MOTH IS THAT? Thursday, 6 August 2015. I'm rather down to the barrel-scrapings today, thanks to my diversionary adventures among the butterflies and neglect of the moth trap for the last few nights. We were down in London on grandparent duty yesterday, too, and had the pleasure of showing the little one her first Holly Blue at close quarters. They seem very common in the capital. I would check out Coc...

A tale of moths and men. Moths and butterflies - the difference. How to catch (but not kill) moths. WHAT MOTH IS THAT? Thursday, 30 October 2014. Meanwhile, I've been asked to flag up a talk on Bonfire Night about the amazing Death's Head Hawk moths of Kirtlington which featured at exciting length on the blog last month - you can remind yourself here. My fellow trapper Julian Howe from Bletchingdon, the next door village, will give a talk about the moth and t he Moth Bible. Wednesday, 29 October 2014.
