A Death a Day: April 13 | Kojiro Sasaki

http://deathaday.blogspot.com/2008/04/april-13-kojiro-sasaki.html

A Death a Day. How somebody died, every day an 8-month project. April 13, 2008. April 13 Kojiro Sasaki. April 13, 1612: Age 27. Sasaki Kojiro was a famous swordsman in Japan, best known for duelling the even more famous Musashi Miyamoto. At the time, however, he was considered one of the finest swordsmen in the land, renowned for having fended off three enemies with nothing but a fan. Does this not just relate to Carole's and my exchange today at wutyl-forum? Its all one big (serious) joke. Musashi Vs Ko...

George Gordon, Lord Byron, was one of England's most influential poets and one of her many famous bad boys. We met him briefly as the father of Ada Lovelace. The polymath who invented computers, but the two shared only two qualities: brilliance and beauty. As it happens hardly knew each other. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). April 24 A Death A Day.

A Death a Day. How somebody died, every day an 8-month project. April 14, 2008. April 14 Rachel Carson. May 27, 1907 - April 14, 1964: Age 56. Rachel Carson was the American biologist who raised hell when she published Silent Spring. Was published, in the 1960s, I was a schoolchild. In those days, the simple idea of not. Throwing your trash out the car window was a concept original enough to be worthy of an entire ad campaign. Carson's influence was a major catalyst for the banning of DDT as an agricultu...

Look Again: September 2007

http://lookagain-franca.blogspot.com/2007_09_01_archive.html

September 27, 2007. An elder was talking to his grandson. “Sometimes I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart,” said the old man. “One wolf is vengeaful, angry, and violent. The other wolf is loving and compassionate.” The grandson asked, “Which wolf will win the fight, grandfather? 8221; The old man answered: “The one I feed.”. Instead, he told me the story above, and then said, "Don't feed the bitch.". September 2, 2007. I want to learn to meditate. Where do I start? Is there a hierarchy?

Look Again: Te Shan

http://lookagain-franca.blogspot.com/2009/06/te-shan.html

June 11, 2009. When Te Shan left northern China on foot heading south, determined to destroy what he had heard as the teaching of a special transmission outside of doctrine, he was a dedicated Buddhist scholar thoroughly attached to formal learning. He responded, commentaries which were actually books on books on ways to reality that he considered so indispensable that he had to carry them with him everywhere he went. The old woman then said, " The Diamond Cutter Sutra. The morning following his Enlighte...

May 29, 2008. More Thoughts from Oliver. More thoughts on death from my eloquent friend Oliver Schroer, who has untreatable leukemia. Dying is a funny subject. Very slippery when you try to get in there. I mean, I am dying now, am I not? I am still trying to decide if he misspelled "imminent", which means "any minute now", or deliberately used "immanent", which can mean "performed entirely with the mind". May 14, 2008. Some time ago a multimedia item in the on-line New York Times. The energy we save?

http://lookagain-franca.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

January 31, 2008. If a beam falls and nobody notices, does it change anyone's life? An excerpt from Dashiell Hammett's "The Maltese Falcon". Sam Spade tells the story of a Mr. Flitcraft, who has a good life, but completely disappears, abandoning his wife and two small children:. When the beam falls, there is an instant of awakening. What people do next varies a little, but not much. In the vast majority of cases, they go back to sleep. I'm grateful to delanceyplace.com. For bringing this into my inbox.

http://lookagain-franca.blogspot.com/2007_12_01_archive.html

December 21, 2007. 8 Tips for Waking Up Over the Holidays. You've developed a nice meditation practice. You sit every day, you face the stresses and strains of daily life with calm and equanimity, and you feel that, finally, you're beginning to get some kind of handle on your patterns. Then you go home for Christmas. Or Christmas comes home to you. Either way, now more than ever a budding meditation practice can fall apart. But this is actually the very best time to keep your practice strong. If you sit ...

Look Again: Defying Comfort

http://lookagain-franca.blogspot.com/2008/05/defying-comfort.html

May 14, 2008. Some time ago a multimedia item in the on-line New York Times. I love statements like this! Everything about the piece, from the death-defying statement to the details of design, challenges assumptions on an intellectual, emotional, and somatic level. Why should we be comfortable? When we design an office in which all needed tools can be reached immediately, what do we do with the time we save? The energy we save? Are we designing spaces that make us weak, unfocussed, confused, lazy? Here i...

Look Again: March 2008

http://lookagain-franca.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

March 23, 2008. Watch a person training a dog. When the dog does the right thing, the person says "Yes! And gives the animal a treat. Watch a parent and child: when the child does something great, the parent smiles, and his or her body language reflects pleasure and pride. Watch a meditation class. When people report breakthrough experiences, does the teacher smile and show appreciation? When people report problems, does the teacher frown and look concerned? What kind of reports get attention? I teach me...

July 9, 2008. Please consider donating. You'll find a link on the front page of his website www.oliverschroer.com. Also a delightful animation of him dancing at his Last Concert on His Tour of This Planet. Just under a month before he died. The picture above was taken at the concert as well. You can check out my previous posts for his thoughts on dying here. Very sorry to hear this news. He sounded like a very wise person. July 9, 2008 at 2:13 PM. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Look Again: November 2007

http://lookagain-franca.blogspot.com/2007_11_01_archive.html

November 10, 2007. A lot of people hold the assumption that the objective of meditation practice is to stop having thoughts and feelings. More specifically, that a "good" meditation session is one in which no thoughts or feelings arise. This is a mistake. Life is what we experience. What do we experience? Thoughts, feelings, and sensations. Why try to get rid of two thirds of our life? People who have no thoughts are stupid. People who have no feelings are Vulcans. If not, then where does it come from?

I am still trying to decide if he misspelled "imminent", which means "any minute now", or deliberately used "immanent", which can mean "performed entirely with the mind". This is a really moving passage. How is your friend doing now? June 25, 2008 at 6:16 AM.
