Joys & Disasters: February 2011
http://jennyrmertes.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, February 8, 2011. You see, there are two of us at home now, and neither of us needs any added fat or sugar. We have to work out almost every day just to take OFF some of the fat we've added to ourselves. So when I'm craving the enjoyment of baking something sweet, the question always comes up: Who's going to eat it? What do you think? I'll let you know what happens. Tuesday, February 1, 2011. Chicken Pot Pie the New-fashioned Way. I gathered a few staples from my pantry and fridge: chicken bouil...

Joys & Disasters: September 2011
http://jennyrmertes.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
Friday, September 16, 2011. If I were alone in the world and needed a friend, the first place I'd go is the produce department of my local grocery store. I mean, have you ever noticed how the people who work in the produce department always—and I mean always—. Say hi and ask if they can help you? If you try to avoid eye contact because you just want some alone time with your radishes and corn, they'll persist. You can't escape them. "Are you finding everything? Thanks, though.". This isn't a cooking blog...

Joys & Disasters: June 2010

Tuesday, June 22, 2010. Who Drinks Coffee in the Desert? Independent coffee stands can be found on nearly every corner in Spokane, Washington. In one six-mile stretch of highway I counted ten independent espresso shacks and one Starbucks. As that was my route to work, I sampled most of them in search of the perfect vanilla latté and found my favorite brew at a shop called Dagny’s: two drive-through windows and no inside seating. So why no independents? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Today I'm grateful for:.

Joys & Disasters: June 2009
http://jennyrmertes.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
Friday, June 26, 2009. We used to have a dog who was outdoors all the time, feared nothing, played hard, and slept happily in the garage. We now have a dog - the same. Dog - who scratches and whines to be indoors, who is afraid of most everything, who is sacked out much of the time, and who insists on sleeping in the house at night. What changed Maverick into Marley? No more chewing, running, or freaking out. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I am a freelance writer and editor, and I would love to help you imp...

Joys & Disasters: August 2011
http://jennyrmertes.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
Sunday, August 28, 2011. This isn’t a cooking blog, which you already know if you’ve read a few of my posts. I don’t fancy myself much of a cook, although I love to bake. Occasionally I'll make something fun that I feel like sharing, and today is one of those times. Fair warning: If you don't like coconut, close this tab and come back next week, or read one of my older posts (please), because you aren’t going to like this recipe. Actually I have fun experimenting when I’m pretty sure the result wil...

Joys & Disasters: "Poise" vs "Posie"—or, why spelling matters
http://jennyrmertes.blogspot.com/2011/08/poise-vs-posieor-why-spelling-matters.html
Thursday, August 25, 2011. Poise" vs "Posie"—or, why spelling matters. One little letter in the wrong place (or a missing letter) can make a big difference. That's why people who do what I do (copyediting and proofreading) are still employed, despite the wonders of technology. What does misspelling have to do with the image above? By sheer coincidence, I saw an ad today for a new product, the one shown above—a purple Poise. Oh dear, it's too funny. Zoe and I have often laughed over a piece of artwork we ...

Joys & Disasters: April 2009

Tuesday, April 14, 2009. 50 Ways to Freeze Your Lover. Did you ever talk someone into doing something and then feel really stupid when it backfired on you? Yesterday I decided Scott and I needed to walk half a mile to our mailbox and back. We've done this a few times lately, and it's felt good to get out in the fresh air. Plus I've turned into Jabbette the Hut over the winter months, so I NEED to walk. Take a walk with me, it'll be fun.". I, in my stocking cap and heavy winter coat, declared that I was q...

Joys & Disasters: Cheesecake in jars in a crock pot? Oh yeah!
http://jennyrmertes.blogspot.com/2013/08/cheesecake-in-crock-pot-in-jar-oh-yeah.html
Monday, August 12, 2013. Cheesecake in jars in a crock pot? I never intended for this blog to be about cooking. That's not who I am. I enjoy baking, but I'm not a good cook, and I had never made cheesecake before because it looked way too complicated. Water baths? Then I saw a crock pot cheesecake recipe on Facebook, and it clicked: I can do this! Yes, it works. It's delicious. I'll make it again. Crock Pot Cheesecake in Jars. Adapted from KAF Recipe. Crust (half recipe for 5-6 half-pint jars). 2) To mak...
