Pinto beans, three ways | Homesick Texan
http://www.homesicktexan.com/2008/11/pinto-beans-three-ways.html
Of all my recipes. Thursday, November 06, 2008. Pinto beans, three ways. It doesn't take much to please me. Give me a big, steaming bowl of charra beans, borracho beans or even plain, porky pinto beans and I will be delighted. Beans were a big part of my diet growing up. At least once a week, we’d have beans for supper, either in the guise of bean salad or in big bowls served with a side of cornbread. Because we just enjoyed eating them so much. But that will just be our secret.). We couldn’t’...

A more precise Texas chili recipe | Homesick Texan
http://www.homesicktexan.com/2009/02/more-precise-texas-chili-recipe.html
Of all my recipes. Wednesday, February 04, 2009. A more precise Texas chili recipe. I love to buy chiles, especially when I find ones that are soft and pliant, so fresh you can imagine they were drying in a Mexican field maybe just last week. But no matter what people say, I love my chili and usually, those that eat it love it, too. So here is some of my chili with measurements. Enjoy! 4 chiles de arbol. 4 pieces of bacon. 4 pounds of chuck roast, cut into 1/4 inch cubes. 1 large onion diced. And leave t...

Spicy pickled okra | Homesick Texan
http://www.homesicktexan.com/2009/08/spicy-pickled-okra-recipe.html
Of all my recipes. Thursday, August 13, 2009. Okra: people either love it or hate it. But okra and I have a more complicated relationship. My head tells me that I don’t like okra—I find it slimy and strange. But if you present me with a plate of fried okra or a jar of pickled okra, I’ll eat it—happily and greedily. I come late to okra, which belies my Southern heritage, I know. I only started eating fried okra. It wasn’t until last October that I finally took the okra-pickle plunge. I was at th...That ni...

Texans in NYC

Jul 17th, 2007 at 1:18 AM. Okay, I hate to admit it, but I am not an avid barbecue eater. I've only tried a couple of restauurants in Texas; I generally reserved eating bbq for family events. I don't even really eat meat often. Yet, it was automatic that I started to miss it. I may have to try RUB again before making a real review of the place, but for now its on my good enough list. I wish cheap bbq existed in this city. but it just doesn't. Still I've seen much more expensive places than this.

So, all that aside, my apartment is really close to a restaurant here by the name of The Delta Grill. I was scared of trying it due to its prices. $6 for a cup of gumbo, a cup! 10 for catfish. Catfish! My lunch special plus beer set me back $19 (ouch! But i was so excited to get home and eat my long awaited po'boy and gumbo. It was okay, but was missing that gumbo flavor (maybe file?
