Archives for category: minimalism. April 9, 2015. Oh my little blog, I’m sorry I abandoned you for so long…. The last couple years, I admit, I haven’t taken time for reflection. I’ve been solely career-focused, obsessed with work and broadening my skills and output in UX research, and learning how to (re)brand myself in a more unique light. I spent a very, very productive year at an amazing ed tech startup. I don’t need sleep! Provide / Produce / Do has been my motto. No time to exercise! But new devices...

Archives for posts with tag: marketing. What’s new and surprising? May 28, 2015. I recently came across this example. As a UX Researcher, I’m not surprised by this. Companies (and designers) wrongly make assumptions about customer motivations and behavior all the time. What does surprise me is the UX community’s continued inability to “sell” the value of UX processes and methods to decision-makers. Dan Turner wrote an accurate depiction of this problem. Last year, especially as it affects startups:.

Archives for posts with tag: PDF. Reading between the lines (and ads). June 17, 2013. Lately I have been coming across quite a few related articles. About making it easier to read content online, ensure screen accessibility. That type of thing. In my own user research and usability testing at work we discovered that users almost always prefer to download or print a PDF for reading rather than scan the HTML, especially when it comes to scientific content. Or the Chrome iReader. Or maybe people still prefe...

Usability testing – card sorting « ColleenDiez.com
http://www.colleendiez.com/usability-testing-card-sorting
Usability testing – card sorting. The product owner requested some user data on our site’s labels and navigation, so I created a card sorting task during one of our usability testing sessions. Participants were asked to sort the cards into the order of what they thought was important, and if they felt the need to group cards together, then that was encouraged. The results are below. It was interesting to get a sense of how our users think and organize topics. The card labels are listed below:.

Heuristics / Sprint tasks document. Example of a document I created to quickly convey usability test results to product owners and developers on Agile teams. The chart shows the Task, the success rate, the heuristic that has been violated, potential Sprint tasks, and additional notes/quotes from participants. This particular usability test was for a new mobile iPad app.

User Testing – video carousel mockups. Three differing mockups of the carousel feature were shown to participants from a previous test. The first mockup was similar to what the participants had seen during a previous test on the internal test website. Version 1b displayed the same mockup with a tooltip on mouseover:. Version 2 displayed uniformly-sized thumbnails, a video play arrow overlay, and a permanent timestamp below the thumbnail. When shown the results, the Agile development team members were.

User testing – paper prototype. During a larger usability study for a group of individual journal homepages, we tested a large paper prototype that I created based on the existing design, with some newly-designed sections added. Participants were given paper cutouts of each homepage section (labels included: Featured, Latest Research, Special Feature) and asked to move the sections around into the order where they thought each section should appear. The exercise typically took about 5 minutes.

Four of the 5 participants regularly encounter genes and/or proteins in their papers, and 2 of the 5 participants are copy editors. Version 1 featured a layout of 4 genes/proteins to a page:. Version 3 featured a layout of 2 genes/proteins to a page, and placed the gene symbol and organism names on separate lines:. The results are below. Additionally, there w...
