Deep Sea Research 2009

Deep Sea Research 2009. Monday, October 12, 2009. Day 15 R/V Point Sur. There were two otter trawls today. The first one was to 750 m and the other one was to 500 m. Some snail fish were caught, another hatchet fish, and shrimp. Hagfish were caught in the first trawl. Those will be shipped to Hawaii. Hopefully they will survive the trip. Jason was sad. He was hoping to get a certain type of rat tail in the trawl, but he didn’t get any. While we were waiting for the trawl, a sea lion was swimming. This mo...

Deep Sea Research 2009: Day 4 R/V Point Sur Part 2

http://deepblusea2009.blogspot.com/2009/10/day-4-point-sur-part-2.html

Deep Sea Research 2009. Thursday, October 1, 2009. Day 4 R/V Point Sur Part 2. Nicole has to dissect the skate to take tissue samples. In the video, you will see the liver, white muscle, heart, and brain. I do not mention it in the video, but next to the brain is the red muscle of the skate. Fish use their white and red muscles for swimming. John is always too nice. In this video, he 'tosses" (really throws) a hagfish at me and it lands in the bucket. 8220;This material is based upon work supported by th...

http://deepblusea2009.blogspot.com/2009/10/day-5-point-sur.html

Deep Sea Research 2009. Friday, October 2, 2009. Day 5 R/V Point Sur. The camera was recovered early this morning. We’re hoping to have many pictures from 1000 m. This video will show you how the camera is recovered by grappling, throwing out a rope with a hook, and by bringing it up on deck with the A-Frame. I’m sorry that the camera recovery might be hard to see since the sun was already shinning brightly this morning. The camera will be deployed again tomorrow. We are expecting a little rough weat...

Deep Sea Research 2009: Day 14 R/V Point Sur

http://deepblusea2009.blogspot.com/2009/10/day-14-rv-point-sur.html

Deep Sea Research 2009. Sunday, October 11, 2009. Day 14 R/V Point Sur. The typhoon storm is supposed to hit us late tomorrow night. So, we’ll be heading back into port tomorrow evening. Hopefully it won’t get too bad out here. This morning the 5:30 am trawl came up with a huge abyssicola skate. Look how big she is! Yes, it is a female. The third picture is the shell gland. This is where the skate makes the egg case for the baby. 8220;This material is based upon work supported by the National Science Fou...

Deep Sea Research 2009. Thursday, October 8, 2009. Day 11 R/V Point Sur. The otter trawl net was awesome! Richie really did an amazing job with fixing it. Thanks so much Richie! It was brought up this morning around 7:30. Do you remember what this crab is called? It’s a squat lobster. This one is smaller than the other crab from yesterday. In the second photo, the fish was dissected. It still had something in its stomach. Can you see what it is? It’s a squat lobster! The past few days have been a little ...

Deep Sea Research 2009: Day 8 R/V Point Sur

Deep Sea Research 2009. Monday, October 5, 2009. Day 8 R/V Point Sur. It was another beautiful morning. Last night, the otter trawl net got damaged during the 2000 m trawl. Jack worked on the net during the day to have it ready for the 3000m trawl for tonight. The respirometer was recovered this morning. Do you remember how the respirometer is brought in closer to the ship? In this video, John explains how to grapple. Tomorrow I will put up a video of John actually grappling the respirometer. This photo ...

Life as the Fraurers: The Traditional Archery Journey Continues

http://fraurer.blogspot.com/2011/03/traditional-archery-journey-continues.html

Life as the Fraurers. Saturday, March 19, 2011. The Traditional Archery Journey Continues. I have been attempting to get a rabbit this winter with my traditional bow and recently.I succeeded! This is the first animal that I have taken with my traditional bow and it was very satisfying. I kept the skin so that I can try to tan it and maybe make some slippers. The fur has tons of soft down in it seeing how it is winter time. Happy trails to everyone. April 14, 2011 at 9:50 AM. View my complete profile.

Life as the Fraurers. Tuesday, January 11, 2011. This photo was literally taken out the window by my desk 5 min ago. Before these bulls showed up we've seen two sets of cow and calf every day. I went outside to get a few nicer shots. The moose in the front isn't just closer to me, he really is bigger than the other guy. FYI Jake - neither of them are legal.yet. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Life as the Fraurers: December 2010

http://fraurer.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html

Life as the Fraurers. Saturday, December 11, 2010. After a year of playing around in various parts of the world we have settled in Homer, AK. We arrived here on Dec. 2nd after driving the Alcan/Cassiar highway. As it turns out it is hard to drive that highway without experiencing some adventure. Here is how it broke down. Day 1: Mostly uneventful. Highlight = unreal scenery on the Sea to Summit Hwy. Shovel a path to the gas pump. We found an abandoned set of golf clubs on the road. Day 5: Arrive in Homer!

Life as the Fraurers: Wrapping up 2011

http://fraurer.blogspot.com/2011/12/wrapping-up-2011.html

Life as the Fraurers. Monday, December 12, 2011. Over the weekend we got another good dump of snow on the hill tops. From the more distant past here are some shots from picking apples from our orchard and making them into cider. The cider was ready for thanksgiving. We tried a different recipe from past ventures in cider making and are really happy with the end result. Here is the harvest. We have three kinds of apple trees (as far as we can tell) and harvested 30 gallons this year. One of the outdoor pr...

Life as the Fraurers: Snow on the Mts

http://fraurer.blogspot.com/2011/09/snow-on-mts.html

Life as the Fraurers. Sunday, September 18, 2011. Snow on the Mts. Yesterday Lou and I woke up to a cold house and a delightful change to our view, snow on top of Sadie's peak. Mid-September and the mornings are getting more chilly, the winds are more fierce, we have nights again, and now snow across the bay. Other exciting changes, Lou and I now have a nephew! Baby Hank arrived Sept 16th. He is a healthy boy at 7lbs 6 oz, blue eyes and for now red curly hair. Another aspect of the project looks at fish ...

Life as the Fraurers: June 2010

http://fraurer.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Life as the Fraurers. Tuesday, June 15, 2010. First steps on the CDT. We started at Crazy Cook, the border is just a few feet behind us. We were so excited to get started the heat didn't bother us too much the first day. This was a 15 mile day. Lou hiking through a "forest" of blooming desert plants one of the first days on the trail. There really wasn't a trail, just a combination of CDT blazes, cairns, and large posts to mark the way. YEAH, a functioning windmill! The temperatures would reach over 90 d...

Life as the Fraurers: May 2010

http://fraurer.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Life as the Fraurers. Friday, May 7, 2010. Starting off in Torres. We saw condors here and guanaco's and Nandu (or Rhea) which are all awesome but hard to photograph. We did capture some parrots hanging out just below a windy pass. We did not expect to see these colorful birds this far south. They were very chatty and loud about it. This bumble bee was not in the best shape. We did see loads of healthy ones buzzing around flowers. The orange color was brilliant. In Torres we saw female Magellanic wood pe...

Tuesday, August 24, 2010. But if one had to look for a silver lining behind that dark funnel cloud, I would imagine that the Southern tradition of the Hurricane Party would have to qualify. In typical Keys tradition, Chef Tim Lyons and the staff at blu will be hosting our Second Annual Hurricane Party this Thursday, September 2nd. Don't worry about the hurricane; you don't need one at blu to enjoy this party! How about some mojitos, daquiris, Alabama slammers and. er, hurricanes? 25 is all it will cost f...
