Chester Birder: Spring Migration
http://chesterbirder.blogspot.com/2010/02/spring-migration.html
Paul Shenton's birding blog. Friday, 12 February 2010. Due to an imminent move into North Wales I have decided to discontinue this blog and start blogging on the new site http:/ theblackgrouse.blogspot.com/. After all ‘chesterbirder’ would have been of a misnomer! The site and its content will be very similar to this one, but given that practically all my birding and nature watching will be focused on North East Wales I felt that a change of name was the order of the day. Posted by Paul Shenton. No of sp...

The Black Grouse: November 2011
http://theblackgrouse.blogspot.com/2011_11_01_archive.html
Birding, stravaiging, foraging and grousing in Flintshire and beyond. Sunday, 27 November 2011. It may well be the North West Birdwatching Fair at Martin Mere this weekend, but even the WWT’s premier reserve would have struggled to match the festival of wildlife on show at Connah’s Quay NR this weekend. Rarer birds included the immature Spoonbill, a score or so Twite, a monster juvenile female Peregrine, a Rock Pipit and on the Bunded Pools a trio of Greenshank and a Red-breasted Merganser. Snow Buntings...

Austin's Birding Blog: March 2015
http://austinmorley.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html
All the wonderful birds and wildlife of Lancashire, Cheshire, North Wales and further. 20/03/2015 Carr Mill Dam, St Helens. I've seen thousands of Scoter off shore and half a dozen in some local lakes like Pennington Flash and Elton Reservoir, but I have never seen a Scoter showing this well before. The bird was found yesterday at Carr Mill Dam, however it wasn't spotted loafing around on the main lake like I've seen them before but on an outflow stream on the south east side of the lake. With lightning ...

The Black Grouse: December 2011
http://theblackgrouse.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Birding, stravaiging, foraging and grousing in Flintshire and beyond. Tuesday, 13 December 2011. I have been out and about over the last few days, including an excellent Saturday morning at the Point of Ayr. If the seawatch at this site on Friday was a little sketchy, it redeemed itself the following day with some excellent birds. A Ron Atkinson spotter’s badge was then duly earned after he picked out a female Goosander that had stealthily drifted in. For afters it was over to Warren Fields and after set...

Chester Birder: Have I Got Smews For You
http://chesterbirder.blogspot.com/2010/02/have-i-got-smews-for-you.html
Paul Shenton's birding blog. Sunday, 7 February 2010. Have I Got Smews For You. Having waited for the best part of five years for a Red-necked Grebe or drake Smew to turn up somewhere reasonably local, my patience finally evaporated yesterday and 007 and I motored over to east Nottinghamshire to try and net both these elusive species. The most handsome of ducks was an absolute nightmare to find and it took two laps and three hours of the area before we eventually found a pair of drakes skulking in an ina...

Chester Birder: Instruments of Torture
http://chesterbirder.blogspot.com/2010/02/instruments-of-torture.html
Paul Shenton's birding blog. Wednesday, 10 February 2010. The release of the methods of torture Binyam Mohamed was subject to may have made the news headlines today, but my own personal instrument of torment was a set of bathroom scales I had a nasty encounter with a couple of days back. So it was that ‘Operation Fighting Fit’ began in earnest today with a thirteen mile walk around Lake Vyrnwy – somewhere flat to ease me in! All that I could muster today from six miles of open water was a Little Grebe, a...

Chester Birder: July 2009
http://chesterbirder.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html
Paul Shenton's birding blog. Tuesday, 28 July 2009. An excellent evening at Inner Marsh Farm last night produced one, possibly two, calling Quail, three Hobbies and a Green Sandpiper. Things started slowly, although I was cheered by the sight of the two adult Oystercatchers reunited with their last chick. In fading light, time was called and three fellow birders and I headed back to the car park. One of these, Stan Skelton, mentioned that he thought he had heard a Quail calling on a previous evening ...

Chester Birder: June 2009
http://chesterbirder.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
Paul Shenton's birding blog. Sunday, 28 June 2009. A trickle of southern migrants was the highlight of Saturday’s trip to Inner Marsh Farm. The brooding heat inflicted a sort of lethargy on the birds with most of them snoozing or feeding half-heartedly around the pool edges. Also of note in front of the hide were three Common Terns lazing with sizeable flocks of Lapwing and Black-headed Gulls, peppered with a handful of Black-tailed Godwits. Posted by Paul Shenton. Labels: Inner Marsh Farm. On another de...

Chester Birder: October 2009
http://chesterbirder.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html
Paul Shenton's birding blog. Saturday, 31 October 2009. A gorgeous morning on Fenn’s and Whixall Mosses failed to produce either the Great Grey Shrike of Hen Harrier reported yesterday, but the Halloween sunshine did bring out a few dragonflies including a spooky Black Darter. Birding can be hard going here and today was no exception - the best I had turned up after the first hour was a Green Woodpecker flying at a fair distance and a handful of Stonechats. I must confess that during my many hours birdin...
