Dee's Place Online: February 2012
http://www.deetillermusic.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
Musings of a Music Teacher. Wednesday, February 22, 2012. Jazz and The Underground Railroad. I just finished "fixing up" the SMARTboard lessons I've been using in my classroom to teach about Jazz and African American Spirituals. In our 3rd grade textbook, there are several spirituals and a little "discussion" about slavery and the Underground Railroad. Last year, I discovered the Reading Rainbox segment that covers the book "Follow the Drinkin' Gourd" on United Streaming (also available on Youtube).

Dee's Place Online: A glimpse of my classroom
http://www.deetillermusic.com/2012/09/a-glimpse-of-my-classroom.html
Musings of a Music Teacher. Monday, September 3, 2012. A glimpse of my classroom. Most of my colleagues posted photos of their classroom early in August. I am just getting around to it! But better late than never since I have included links to goodies! I transferred to a new campus on the last day of school last year. I spent part of my summer going through stuff at the new campus and transferring the 10 boxes of my own stuff into my "new" classroom! Here is my "home away from home! There were no Solfege...

Dee's Place Online: Teacher Evaluations... Had one lately?
http://www.deetillermusic.com/2013/01/teacher-evaluations-had-one-lately.html
Musings of a Music Teacher. Sunday, January 27, 2013. Teacher Evaluations. Had one lately? The problem for music educators is that the best practices of our field have centered around methodologies that were developed well before the current trends in research in education. I was well versed in these methodologies and depended on the resources and materials that I purchased or were provided by my district for teaching in the elementary music classroom. Recently, during an Elementary Music Educators meeti...

Musings of a Music Teacher. Thursday, August 30, 2012. My apologies for the silence over the summer! Sometimes in the busy-ness, blogging gets pushed to the side. I tend to "pile my plate" and then get overwhelmed with it all! If you haven't discovered the Music K-8 Magazine, you need to click on this link right away and peruse their wonderful resources! If you haven't joined their email list, you are missing out on an amazing networking opportunity! I worked on a number of SMARTboard files over the summ...

Dee's Place Online: Different Voices
http://www.deetillermusic.com/2012/09/different-voices.html
Musings of a Music Teacher. Monday, September 3, 2012. Here is a SMARTBoard lesson for Kinder-1st with icons representing the different voices we use. It is a great way to begin teaching children how to use their voices and to recognize their own singing voices. Allow them to "try out" their voices with the chant while you point to different icons. Finally, try to "trick" them by moving more quickly between icons to see if they can change their voice "mid-stream" so to speak. View my complete profile.

Dee's Place Online: Three Word Message
http://www.deetillermusic.com/2011/04/three-word-message.html
Musings of a Music Teacher. Saturday, April 30, 2011. Last week was TAKS testing at our school. It is a boring two days for me. I get the privilege of monitoring the hallways, giving teachers a break, taking kids to the nurse, walking the "wiggles" out of "testors" who need a break. I also get to read (and re-read) the students' work posted on the walls. They were covered with encouraging messages from classmates, teachers and the students' "reading buddies" from the lower grade levels. Life Goes On.".

Musings of a Music Teacher. Sunday, April 8, 2012. SMARTboard Lessons and Professional Connections. When I got my SMARTboard (now a little over a year ago), I started looking for help on the internet. I discovered some lessons by another elementary music teacher that had been uploaded to SMART Technologies Lesson Exchange (find it here). I tried them out in my classroom and they were a big hit! Meet her here: http:/ cphmusic.blogspot.com/. Find her on Pinterest: http:/ pinterest.com/zartmo/. I now follow...

Dee's Place Online: Beethoven and Boomwhackers!
http://www.deetillermusic.com/2012/04/beethoven-and-boomwhackers.html
Musings of a Music Teacher. Monday, April 2, 2012. I think I am on a mission to change the minds of fellow music teachers about the place of technology in their classroom. Today, our school received the first round of the new computer deployment. My room is slated to get two student computers and I will have a laptop instead of the ancient desk top! I was so excited all day. When she asked why they felt that way, they said "whatever do I need them for? She was aghast at the thought and so was I! Begins w...

Dee's Place Online: SMARTboard Fun!
http://www.deetillermusic.com/2011/10/smartboard-fun.html
Musings of a Music Teacher. Sunday, October 23, 2011. I have had a blast with my SMARTboard this year! I use it in every lesson. If you don't know what a SMARTboard is, check out this Youtube video. I have found that using the SMARTboard keeps my students more engaged, makes my lessons more interesting, better organized and easy to teach. Also, assessment is so much more accurate. I can really tell that my students are learning more and retaining more from week to week. The game is really fun! First I ha...
