Jacana Days: Thoughts from Abroad. Life in Uganda and Random Thoughts from a Sixty Something. Deirdre Carabine’s Blog. Old ruins, living stones, glass, and pottery: County Kilkenny’s medieval ecclesiastical heritage. Co Kilkenny, specifically the south-eastern end of it, is a hidden gem of Irish medieval history. Forget the Book of Kells, Viking Dublin, and Norman Dublin (well, no don’t), and Temple Bar (yes, do! First stop is the ancient village of Gowran with its late thirteenth-century collegiate chur...

chapter seven - Hibiscus House Kampala
http://www.hibiscushouse.org/home/chapter-seven
Website of deirdre carabine and michel lejeune. An interesting story from the Mayo News on 21 May 1852 reports that a young Carabine lad was killed in a fight with a Peter Kennedy in Belfast. This could have been our Thomas and his second-born son who died needlessly at the age of only 8-9 years. Imagine the crowd carrying your son's lifeless body home to your wife and having to tell her what happened! Perhaps it is also an sign of the famous Carabine temper! I wonder how long the father stayed in jail!

chapter three - Hibiscus House Kampala
http://www.hibiscushouse.org/home/chapter-three
Website of deirdre carabine and michel lejeune. Social Conditions in Belfast. The streets were dirty, the small houses seriously overcrowded, and the Lagan was used a sewer. It was only in the late 1880s and early 1890s that Belfast Council built a network of sewers what they did before that can only be guessed at! The cops appear to have been rather heavy-handed and brutal, arresting people for the smallest of things whistling at a boat, for example! Stabbings were regular and you could expect to be fin...

Thomas Carabine Family Tree. The following "trees" are a composite of firm facts and other possible family connections based on names, dates, and place, mostly found in the www.familysearch.org databases. Website of deirdre carabine and michel lejeune. Politics, Violence, and Crime. Understandably, there was a large gap between the rich and the poor, and frequent religious and political unrest resulting in riots (quelle surprise! Belfast was strongly Presbyterian (although in 1879 there were 55,575 Catholics in the city). On 12 July 1857, confrontations between crowds of Catholics and Protestants turned into ten days of rioting, with many of the police force joining the Protestant side! I'm sure he often ...

Jacana Days: Thoughts from Abroad. Life in Uganda and Random Thoughts from a Fifty Something. Deirdre Carabine’s Blog. Love and Negative Theology. Perhaps a strange title for a conference paper, but this is what I spoke about recently in Metochi on the island of Lesvos, Greece. Since I couldn’t speak in the abstract, I chose Marguerite Porete (burned at the stake in 310 on 1 June in Paris for perceived heresy) to illustrate the relationship between the two concepts.
