The Dendritic Arbor: Perhaps I should flip a coin?

http://dendritic-arbor.blogspot.com/2010/08/perhaps-i-should-flip-coin.html

Watch a synthetic biologist being born. Monday, August 23, 2010. Perhaps I should flip a coin? I'm working out my class schedule for the upcoming semester, and I've run into a bit of a dilemma. Two classes are at the exact same time. Both clamor for my attention. Both are only offered in the fall, and this is my last year. They are as mutually exclusive as it is possible for two classes to be. I want to study systems biology in grad school. Therefore, I should get started. Taking this class may h...I sho...

The Dendritic Arbor: What's wrong with the cartoon eukaryotic cell? [Unusual Cells pt. 1]

http://dendritic-arbor.blogspot.com/2010/08/whats-wrong-with-cartoon-eukaryotic.html

Watch a synthetic biologist being born. Sunday, August 29, 2010. What's wrong with the cartoon eukaryotic cell? Unusual Cells pt. 1]. I'm starting a series of posts based on a class I taught about "Unusual Cells" for Splash. Eventually, each post will include links to all the others. The point of this series is to understand the wild and crazy unusual cells that populate the world (and that populate us! But we should first understand the usual. Where this image is from. So what's wrong with this cell?

The Dendritic Arbor: June 2010

http://dendritic-arbor.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Watch a synthetic biologist being born. Thursday, June 24, 2010. Life lessons for synthetic biologists. 1 A serious lesson. Biology may or may not care about the physicist's insatiable desire for elegance." - Jeff Hasty. Figure 1: In other words, sometimes this happens. From Hasty et al, Physical Review Letters. 2002 doi: 10.1103/PhysRevLett.88.148101. 2 Another lesson that is just as serious. You load your gel. The idea, of course, is to prevent this from happening. [Original photo source]. By the Orego...

The Dendritic Arbor: April 2010

http://dendritic-arbor.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Watch a synthetic biologist being born. Monday, April 26, 2010. Invasion of the possibly useful jargon. Can we ignore thermal motion of molecules, or the transient behavior when you begin applying force? It all depends on the length scale. Strangely enough, the jargon-adapting habit seems to be largely involuntary. However, the success or failure of a given word is definitely related to its usefulness, to the usefulness of the metaphor. There's not that. Addendum: jargon-adapting is also not particularly...

The Dendritic Arbor: August 2009

Watch a synthetic biologist being born. Friday, August 7, 2009. Review papers are your friend! Links to this post. Saturday, August 1, 2009. The strawberries are delicious. Today I decided to try a DIY DNA extraction. I started with Meredith Patterson's informal instructions. Figured out what chemistry was actually happening, looked up some protocols from actual labs. And found what might be the original paper. Are generic commercial strawberries? EDIT: they are apparently octoploid. Impressive! Watching...

http://paul-mit.blogspot.com/2008/08/youtube-addict.html

Sunday, August 17, 2008. So at family brunch today, my dad brought up the famous "Barack Roll" that's been all over the intertubes lately.and I was aghast to discover that the rest of my family had absolutely no idea what it was like to be rickrolled. A problem which I have now corrected. :). Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Sad little king of a sad little hill. Friday, November 30, 2007. Since the first time since AP Chemistry my junior year, I once again have goggle lines from working at my UROP. I feel like such a nerd, and I'm not at all ashamed. ;). So, first semester is almost over.mixed feelings there. It's getting more difficult for me to post long blog entries - partly because I have less time than I'm used to, but mainly because the entries I want to write tend to be on pretty complex subjects - so I hope you don't mind the short ones. ;). Because this...

Wednesday, August 6, 2008. Sad little king of a sad little hill". Some of you may know that I am mildly obsessed with the TV show Firefly. Which is a fantastic mashup of the sci-fi and Western genres. I've watched the entire series now (some episodes multiple times), but this scene remains one of my favorites. Just thought I'd share. :). Dude, that guy totally just got pwned! August 6, 2008 at 10:49 PM. August 7, 2008 at 9:55 PM. I love Firefly. It's my favorite tv show too! August 8, 2008 at 6:03 PM.

Friday, February 29, 2008. February 29 - the day that comes once every four years. Almost as widely anticipated as Pi Day. Seriously - my advising group and I went out to dinner at The Cheesecake Factory (for free! Oh, I do love MIT's free food) a few nights ago, and we actually ended up talking about how all of us were really excited to see what Pi Day at MIT would be like. Yeah, we're nerds. Anyway, I have my first 5.12 test in oh, 40 minutes. Who's excited! In other news, it's Friday. :). Crazy, I kno...

In other news, the brothers liked the pledge project. Hell yes. Saturday, January 19, 2008. Why am i still up? Oh yeah, Mystery Hunt. So that made me happy. Friday, July 18, 2008. Reflections on a MITblogs Entry. In retrospect, it's fragmented as heck and I nearly cried writing it. But I still think it's one of the most important entries I've written this entire summer. Certainly the most meaningful. Enjoy your weekend, everybody! Monday, July 14, 2008. I am currently devouring reheated steak and lobster left over from when my parents and I went out this weekend. Mm, surf and turf. Reminds me of Rush. And of family. Saturday, July 12, 2008. Wednesday, 23 June 2010. My name is Ash and I'm a software developer. Sadly enough, I've wanted to write code professionally for as long as I can remember. In fact, I was programming long before I was old enough to understand that I could actually get paid for it. In 2008, I made this rather small dream a reality and I've been working in the industry ever since. On 30th March 2010, the Large Hadron Collider. I'll record my progress on this blog, posting up code examples for the techniques discussed.

Watch a synthetic biologist being born. Monday, October 18, 2010. I'm up late writing MATLAB code to analyze a whole load of particle tracking data. It's not exactly a fun process, but I can feel. Myself getting better at MATLAB. It's like the coding equivalent of eating all my asparagus. There are some great tricks you can do to slice and dice arrays with fancy indexing. But, ugh, the syntax for optional arguments makes me wince (and avoid using optional arguments, unfortunately). Links to this post.

FCTI individually prepares for each patient (Autologous) Dendritic Cells and Dendritic Cell Vaccines. Immunosurveillance for tumors is often ineffective, apparently because the immune responses to cancer are generally rather weak. The major effort of oncological immunology today is to find ways to augment the host immune response to cancer. The main reasons are:. The key function of dendritic cells is that of "presenting of antigen": binding of antigen, conversion of antigen protein to short peptides ("a...
