Market Place, Closed 1983. No 2 on 1757 Map. Picture by kind permission of www.whatsthatpicture.com. Kelly's 1883 entry - Claxton, George Arthur, Eagle, Market place. The Eagle was a very big pub, there are now a number of businesses occupying the site, including the Twin Brothers. Pub and Eagle News Newsagents. A Steward and Patteson pub from the '30s it eventually came under the umbrella of Watneys/Norwich Brewery.

White Lion (closed 1915). Crown Inn (closed 1970). Fox, John, White Lion, Church street. Kirk, William, Crown, and carpenter, Church street. On the night of 8 September 1915 a German Zeppelin bombed Dereham causing considerable damage and killing five people. The White Lion was so badly damaged that it never again opened as a pub. The Inland Revenue building now stands on the site. (6). In this photograph the name over the door is James? This would be James Eglen licensee 1895 - closure. (8).
