Apr 27, 2016. The following day, as we sat for Sunday dinner, I was reminded that shortly before my Father’s passing he had spent considerable time and effort to make that very same decision. A apurchase that, sadly, until now, had gone unused. At first, I felt uneasy; an uncomfortable blend of grief and a lingering adolescent need for self-determination, but as I placed the cold metal frame upon my face I saw the unexpected; There, in the reflection, I saw my Father’s eyes.

There are many who describe me as quiet man; for despite their invitations receive little in return with perhaps the odd exception of a gentle nod or timid salutation. But my silence is a symptom; for it is not that I am quiet but rather considered. So I can hide within the shadows, risking nothing and understanding little, or I can choose to move beyond the confines of my certainty, so-called.
