Desert Vivarium

Friday, October 06, 2006. Life continues to be good in the vivarium. I'm trying to get the residents fattened up in preparation for their winter cool down with hopes of some spring breeding action. The students in my classes have done a great job in catching grasshoppers and crickets for the spiny lizards. Even though the insect food is mainly for the Spiny Lizards the Desert Iguanas manage to get their share. Posted by Scott John at 11:13 AM. Thursday, April 27, 2006. Life in the Vivarium. Desert Vivarium: Life in the Vivarium

http://desertviv.blogspot.com/2006/04/life-in-vivarium.html

Thursday, April 27, 2006. Life in the Vivarium. Here are some recent photos of action in the "desert". Desert Spiny Lizard waking up in the morning. Note the circular tracks this guy made to bury himself. They always make these marks, so its fairly easy to find where thet are burried. Just the "guys" hanging out for a morning warm-up. I don't think a Chuckwalla or the Collared Lizard is in this photo but all three Desert Iguanas and two of the three Desert Spiny Lizards are in this view.

Desert Vivarium: January 2006

http://desertviv.blogspot.com/2006_01_01_archive.html

Tuesday, January 03, 2006. I was awarded a grant six years ago from a local television station to build my dream vivarium in my 8th grade science classroom. With the help of some of my students we put it together, collected some rocks, added catus and sand. It took some work to arrange the lighting and heat lamps, but once that was done we were ready for some lizards. The vivarium is 12 feet long, 3 feet wide and 2.5 feet tall. For questions or comments. Posted by Scott John at 8:22 AM.

Desert Vivarium: Spring Happenings

http://desertviv.blogspot.com/2006/04/spring-happenings.html

Tuesday, April 18, 2006. I have a 1.2 group of young Desert Iguanas. I've been surprised at how aggressively they go after insects. Much more so than the Chuckwallas which seem to eat insects only in the fall. The Desert Spiny Lizards have been a great addition this year. They are very colorful (I'll try to get a better photo) and have a lot of personality. Posted by Scott John at 11:06 AM. View my complete profile.

Scott John Reptiles: Texas Baird's Ratsnakes

http://sjohnreptiles.blogspot.com/2009/03/one-of-most-interesting-of-all-western.html

Wednesday, March 18, 2009. Bandera Co. Baird's. This group originates from the far eastern part of their range along the edges of the Edwards Plateau. I have struggled to get a photo that represents the true colors of my breeders. These animals have some of the most extensive and intense orange that you will see in any Baird's. This specimen is a good example of the silvery metallic look seen in Baird's of this locale. This close-up photo of the same animal shows the red-orange highlights. This is a loca...

Friday, March 13, 2009. Photo courtesy of Nathan Wells. From this region, and as with many zones of intergradation, this region produces some fascinating animals that are unique. In the species accounts below, I have some west Texas. That are good representatives of what I have just mentioned, interestingly beautiful anaimls that are a product of the equally interesting and beautiful habitat from which they occur.
