The first meeting of the original Society of Cogers was convened in the upper room of a tavern in Bride Lane, Fleet Street, in 1755. Its founder members were friends of John Wilkes, a leader of popular agitation against the ministers of George the Third in the cause of freedom of the press. The proceedings traditionally begin when the person appointed to moderate the debate sets the emblem of the society - the Apple of Discord - upon the (upturned) Cup of Human Contentment. Membership of the Cogers may vary in cost between the different Cogers Clubs. At the present time the City of London Cogers, the Westminster Cogers and Ware Cogers each have a Membership Fee of £10 per year. Application should be made to the Treasurer at any club meeting. Note however that Members are welcome to attend all these clubs for a single membership fee. Note also that visitors are always welcome even without membership. CLICK for Accreditation form.
