Bricolage: March 2011
http://bricolagebfd.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 14, 2011. As the bearer of a trade certificate in French Polishing (among other things), it is with much mirth I gaze upon the latest snide captioning from Unhappy Hipsters. Another Sunday morning spent whisking small batches of artisanal wood stains so they might continue darkening the floor, one six-inch-square at a time. Photo: Misha Gravenor; Dwell. Bricolage: On innovation
http://bricolagebfd.blogspot.com/2012/05/on-innovation.html
Saturday, May 26, 2012. Design, innovation and the making of things have been hot topics of late. Whether it is from the perspective of the manufacturing industry, the designers or commentators, many words have been split. Take for example a session on RN's By Design this morning. I have two significant problems with this sort of response. Secondly, the scale of such operations is completely ridiculous to offer up as a model for start-ups, or even for governments looking at how to promote innovation....

http://bricolagebfd.blogspot.com/2013/11/the-invite.html
Monday, November 11, 2013. The invite. The workshop is full of blackwood, rock maple, American ash, hoop pine ply and rolls and rolls of felt. Plenty of time for breathing after the 8th. Bricolage: August 2012
http://bricolagebfd.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
Wednesday, August 29, 2012. Juhl, Wegner and Jacobsen - well-made, the thoughtful, and the daring. One of the most interesting processes when designing is how the ordinary, the usual, the everyday suddenly becomes as mysterious as something discovered at 1800 metres under the ocean or hanging in the upper canopy of a Sulawesian forest. I'm currently focused on chair design of the twentieth and twenty first centuries, in particular the Danish designers and architects Arne Jacobsen, Hans Wegner and Finn Ju...

Bricolage: December 2011
http://bricolagebfd.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html
Saturday, December 3, 2011. Things I Have Done. It appears to be December. How this has come to pass is beyond me. A year in which not a lot of making got done due to other revenue raising activities, but quite a lot of exhibition. Visiting has occurred, including a fair bit interstate. Which provided an unexpected narrative to the show. Changes that leave you struck by vertigo with whole streetscapes. There were some outward indications of more affluence in suburbs where you wouldn't have publicly whisp...

Bricolage: December 2010
http://bricolagebfd.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Thursday, December 30, 2010. A query about a garden gate for one of my neighbours prompted yesterday's complaint about what is available as ethically sourced timbers in Australia. It also prompted me to pick through the design books last night, and to drive home from the now daily trip to the Husqvarna dealership on a very roundabout route. Looking for gates. Routine of so many of my fellow countrypersons . Being easy to look after does not excuse the ugly. The fence above is still intact - a day's work ...

Bricolage: November 2012
http://bricolagebfd.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, November 29, 2012. If you're reading this blog, I can assume you have an interest in design and art, and therefore some knowledge about training and education in this area. And you will fully understand how disastrous these sort of changes to access to visual art education are. One of the problems in our system of split responsibility for education provision between differing tiers of government is that the state ninnies don't have to think - its now someone else's problem. Sturt School of Wood.
