Designing Learners: August 2014

http://www.designinglearners.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Sunday, August 31, 2014. Every right idea is eventually a wrong idea. Reform" is such a charged word when it comes to education, but why? Why are we afraid of examining, testing, and implementing change? Brilliant ideas from the previous generation are the stagnant ideas of today - education needs to grow and evolve as students grow and evolve. How can we possibly use an old model of instruction if our goal is to grow self-directed learners? By the same token, however, we have to remember that our.

Designing Learners: What Time is the Right Time?

http://www.designinglearners.com/2014/09/what-time-is-right-time.html

Saturday, September 6, 2014. What Time is the Right Time? Education often has the reputation of being behind the times in design, function and purpose. Those working in the field who want the change to occur become frustrated at the rate in which change happens. The question is, why does this happen? So, what is the right time? Lemov even goes as far as having students repeatedly practice routines and procedures until they are accurate and efficient. How is your classroom organized for the start and end of each class period? Since your classroom should f...

Designing Learners: If I had a hammer...

http://www.designinglearners.com/2014/09/if-i-had-hammer.html

Sunday, September 14, 2014. If I had a hammer. I wouldn't know what to do with it. I mean, listen, I understand what a hammer does. I've assembled countless Sauder bookshelves and desks. I own a drill (though I couldn't tell you the last time it was used). But, I don't know what to do. With a hammer if it isn't spelled out in large pictures or without pre-drilled pieces labeled with stickers. Last year. That was followed by The Maker Movement Manifesto. And Zero to Maker. I'm excited to say that, for the...

Designing Learners: The properties of wood

http://www.designinglearners.com/2014/09/the-properties-of-wood.html

Sunday, September 21, 2014. The properties of wood. I haven't even picked up a tool yet, but I'm already growing from being part of the #SoulcraftCohort. I discussed in a previous post. I still don't have faith in myself that I'll leave with anything beyond kindling, but Peter. Gave himself a challenge during our discussions to try not to find analogy and parable in everything we're doing here, but we learned a couple of things about wood today that make it difficult for me to make the same attempt.

Designing Learnovations

Future Perspectives on Course Design. Instructional design is grounded in a strong history of systems-based design and models that define the process of designing rather than the design itself. I frequently ponder on this history, but also think about the problems future instructional designers (course designers) will be challenged with solving.
