Farming Like the Future Depends On It. Downtown St. Paul. Tag Archives: Animal Welfare. I Figured out the Barn! I’m a very happy fellow these days. You see, I’ve just solved a three-year old dilemma that’s been aggravating me every time I move cows or pigs around the barn. And all it took was accidentally setting up this panel just so. This makes absolutely no sense, I know, but bear with me as I explain in excruciating detail. But the problem is that we don’t have any dairy cows. Instead we have beef ca...

This is your pasture on chickens. | Green Machine Farm
http://greenmachinefarm.com/this-is-your-pasture-on-chickens
Farming Like the Future Depends On It. Downtown St. Paul. This is your pasture on chickens. Meat chickens aren’t exactly the most fun animals to raise. Sure, they’re easy and fast, but they’re pretty gross critters, especially the cornish cross. Add to that the fact that we don’t make much money off of the chickens and they’d seem like something we’d get rid of. The other day I decided that I’d keep the chickens around even if they didn’t make us any money. Why? See a bit of difference? And then you̵...

Cheap Chicken Nipple Waterers | Green Machine Farm
http://greenmachinefarm.com/cheap-chicken-nipple-waterers
Farming Like the Future Depends On It. Downtown St. Paul. Cheap Chicken Nipple Waterers. OK, I’ll admit it, I’m pretty cheap sometimes. It comes in handy when you’ve chosen an extremely lucrative profession like farming. But sometimes frugality leads me astray. The first iterations of our chicken waterers were built with some very nice poultry nipple waterers. I thought they’d be a step-up because they can be disassembled for cleaning. Farming Like the Future Depends On It. Downtown St. Paul. RSS feed for this section. Broilers: Scaling, Efficiency and Other Excuses. I wanted to believe that Joel Salatin’s chicken-raising method would work for us. We started out with some pens we slapped together from recycled material and dutifully used them for a few years. After that, the pens flaws were showing. I redesigned the pens. A: you don’t experience very windy conditions during the growing season. In order to sell chicken at a farmers mark...

Turkeys: take two | Green Machine Farm
http://greenmachinefarm.com/turkeys-take-two
Farming Like the Future Depends On It. Downtown St. Paul. Earlier this month, against our better judgement we got a few turkeys. We’ve been (understandably) gun-shy about getting more turkeys after our big disaster. With them the first time. But we sure didn’t like having to go buy a turkey for Thanksgiving last year either. So turkeys it is. Turkeys, Chicks, and Babies, Oh My! Thanks for the Turkey. Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window). Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window). Click ...

First Barley Harvest | Green Machine Farm
http://greenmachinefarm.com/first-barley-harvest
Farming Like the Future Depends On It. Downtown St. Paul. It doesn’t seem like it’s been over a week already, but time passes quickly on a farm this time of year. This is what the barley was looking like just a few days before harvest. All kinds of awesome. Then the guy on the swather showed up. I’m not sure why, but the preferred method for harvest(here at least) seems to be swathing and then combining. Once the combine arrives, it’s just a flurry of activity for the next several hours. Tiltall Impulse Sprinkler | Green Machine Farm
http://greenmachinefarm.com/tiltall-broadcast-sprinkler
Farming Like the Future Depends On It. Downtown St. Paul. I’ve had this impulse sprinkler for a few years now. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done. Except for that spike. You can never get that darn spike to hold the sprinkler in place very well. Plus it’d be nice to get the body of the sprinkler a bit higher off the ground to water a larger area. I’ve eyed those rainbird sprinklers in the store that come attached to a chintzy tripod. Just about any impact sprinkler. Chicken Mega-Waterer v1.3. Click ...
