Moving like the sea: Kyrenia - an ancient and modern tale
http://movinglikethesea.blogspot.com/2010/11/kyrenia-ancient-and-modern-tale.html
Moving like the sea. Wednesday, November 3, 2010. Kyrenia - an ancient and modern tale. The road continues flat and straight for a while, to the outskirts of the capital. The city has not one or two, but four names, Lefkosia, Nicosia, Λευκωσία. Lefkoşa and a line through the centre. As if that will solve the problem. One sign is clear and provocative, a large Turkish flag emblazoned on the hillside for the viewing pleasure of residents south of the line. Arabic writing carved in stone, vast remains of ro...

Moving like the sea: September 2009
http://movinglikethesea.blogspot.com/2009_09_01_archive.html
Moving like the sea. Friday, September 4, 2009. Moving like the wind. On the move again - just over a month back from the big OE and I'm heading for 'youkay' and the Association of Learning Technology Conference in the red brick environs of the industrial north (or is it midlands? Nah, it was just my hand cream blurring the screen! The 'dwarf' 747 Jumbo jet in the background adds perspective. Its time to board my one again - on to London and a brief overnighter in Shoreham. Links to this post. I caught a...

Moving like the sea: March 2010
http://movinglikethesea.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html
Moving like the sea. Monday, March 22, 2010. Bearing the same name as the failed Central American colony that almost bankrupted Scotland in 1698, Darien in southern Georgia was ‘founded’ by a group of highland 'warriors' around forty years later. I read somewhere that the few survivors from that ill-fated attempt to found a Scottish empire actually came to Darien Georgia after the event. Moving like the sea: October 2010
http://movinglikethesea.blogspot.com/2010_10_01_archive.html
Moving like the sea. Saturday, October 30, 2010. The old town looks the same. But only in certain corners! The nostalgia rounds off with a flutter in the penny arcades (at 10p a go! Then fish and chips and mushy peas at OAP prices on the pier at Southport. Links to this post. Tuesday, October 19, 2010. The gap between have and have not is as pronounced as ever. No member of this city’s large itinerant population is likely to become mayor today. Although someone has to win the lottery I suppose. There is ...

Moving like the sea: June 2010
http://movinglikethesea.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
Moving like the sea. Thursday, June 3, 2010. Sapelo Island - the one that never got written. The main target of my March 2010 trip to Southern Georgia somehow never found its way here. Being stuck at a not so far flung destination – Melbourne, 747 with cracked windscreen, no other flight this evening – is the first opportunity time-wise to add the finishing touch to the account of that incredible journey. It’s worth looking for tours run by locals for the culture and history, but its hard to find d...

Moving like the sea: Birds
http://movinglikethesea.blogspot.com/2010/12/birds.html
Moving like the sea. Tuesday, December 7, 2010. Green blue lorikeets screech in a flowering pohutukawa. Sulphur hued cockatoos fly in glittering shower formation. Pigeons swoop down from roofs then scatter. Mynahs bounce across grass verges, ratcheting out opinions. Rosellas dive bomb tree to tree chattering all the while. Ibis as old as the island, pelican asleep on a post. The ubiquitous seagull and sparrow…. Across the water Jumbo jets glide to earth then roar to a halt. December 8, 2010 at 11:36 PM.

Moving like the sea: A bad night for monkeys
http://movinglikethesea.blogspot.com/2011/05/bad-night-for-monkeys.html
Moving like the sea. Wednesday, May 18, 2011. A bad night for monkeys. This is a rare departure from the travel focus of this blog - although the 12,000 miles distance between me and the site of the story might just qualify. I love - and want to share - these quotes from Ian Macwhirter's article in The Guardian. On Friday May 6th. Scottish National Party has achieved what most political analysts believed was not possible: an overall majority in a proportional electoral system. Visit the DESTA Project blog.

Moving like the sea: NZ flash mobs warm the heart
http://movinglikethesea.blogspot.com/2011/09/nz-flash-mobs-warm-heart.html
Moving like the sea. Monday, September 5, 2011. NZ flash mobs warm the heart. I was just a little nervous about the state I would find London and other parts of the UK in after recent riots / flash mob / looting episodes. I was in Brixton for the 1981 edition of this sad state of affairs, and don't need to see a repeat. All was calm on my arrival though, and the experience was no worse than hearing scary stories from friends around the country. November 13, 2012 at 2:40 PM. December 5, 2012 at 10:05 PM.
