Tasot Yosot Bosot!: April 2012

An American approaching Korea through a Japanese lens. Thursday, April 26, 2012. Nobody's guarding the southern border anymore! Maybe this is old news to some people, but I was impressed by an article on Ju Sung Ha's blog last week in which he made the rather startling observation. That North Korea has de-prioritized the guarding of its southern border to the point that the only real obstacle to southward-bound defection may be on the South Korean side. Ju's blog and other defector sources have. If the l...

An American approaching Korea through a Japanese lens. Sunday, December 11, 2011. Greta and Kongi: The Experiment Continues. It's been over 6 months since we welcomed Kongi the poodle into our home. Back in August I posted about the challenges. Of persuading our Japanese cat and our Korean dog to co-exist peacefully in the same apartment. Or does their speciesist/nationalist confrontation continue? And, if the latter, which side has dominated in the zero-sum competition for hegemony? Seoul, South Korea.

An American approaching Korea through a Japanese lens. Wednesday, March 21, 2012. With world leaders set to descend on Seoul for the big Nuclear Security Summit next week, the South Korean authorities are justifiably concerned about security. Thus ads like this one, which popped up recently on a news website frequented by North Korean defectors:. Friday, March 9, 2012. Touring Angkor with Multicultural Gang of Miscreants. Our trip was everything I had hoped for and more in terms of spectacular scenery, h...

An American approaching Korea through a Japanese lens. Sunday, April 22, 2012. World's Most Precious Kitty Coming to America! Greta and I are moving to LA in August. I will be starting my PhD in Polisci/IR, and Greta will be continuing her goodwill mission to promote Japanese feline culture and refinement around the world. If the pilots are not kitties, how can we be sure we'll land on our feet? And I'm not allowed to pee the whole time? This is where we're going to live? How will we both fit in such.

An American approaching Korea through a Japanese lens. Monday, September 5, 2011. A Butt-Sniffing Good Time at Cafe Gaene. Yesterday I took our dog Kongi on a fun excursion to Cafe Gaene, a "dog cafe" in my neighborhood. We were accompanied by my second cousin Kathryn, who recently arrived in Korea for a semester abroad. The cafe was one large room with picnic tables around the walls. There were 17 resident dogs of all different breeds, and many of the other customers had brought their own dogs as we...
