The oxygen level becomes very low at altitudes above 8,000 feet (Machu Picchu) and 10,800 ft (Cusco). This causes problems for people who normally live at lower altitudes because their bodies aren’t used to working on so little oxygen. Symptoms usually start 06-24 hours after arrival. Lack of appetite, nausea. Shortness of breath upon exertion.
