When this occurs you search for content which can be deleted to free up some space to get you moving again. Here’s my new quick fix for this: HunkaJunk files. Create dummy files which take up space, but can be quickly and easily deleted without risk; giving you teh wiggle room you need to get moving again. There are various ways this could be done, but a useful tool is FSUtil.
