Lee, the Developer. Musings and messages on software development. And stuff. March 29, 2013. I worked through the first of the programming exercises in the Arrays chapter. This is pretty introductory stuff, but I am trying to get in a habit here. The author of this text is not using standard java code conventions, and I am not sure when this text was written but the code is pre 1.5 as it doesn’t use the enhanced for loop. So my code will differ somewhat from the text’s. March 28, 2013. March 27, 2013.

Lee, the Developer. Musings and messages on software development. And stuff. July 20, 2015. DDD is an approach to Software Engineering. At first blush it appears to be a related to Test Driven Design (TDD) so I think I’ll go with that hypothesis for now. TDD puts the focus on writing unit tests and letting that guide the design and development of the system. So a reasonable assumption would be that DDD puts that same focus on the domain. On Being Agile: Part I. March 4, 2015. September 1, 2013. All the p...

Lee, the Developer. Musings and messages on software development. And stuff. Monthly Archives: March 2015. March 16, 2015. I’ve always been leery of buzzwords and flavor-of-the day technologies; except the ones I get excited about😉. I’ll get more down later as I work with the technologies/techniques involved; but for now let’s summarize. What a microservices architecture buys you is:. Flexibility in technologies used to develop services (polyglot logic and persistence). More plumbing. Since the appl...

Lee, the Developer. Musings and messages on software development. And stuff. July 22, 2015. Μ Services follow up. Some time ago I mentioned how I was excited about micro services. Since writing that post I’ve only gotten more interested in the concept. I’ve prototyped the architecture using Docker containers and I think it stands as a viable “default” architecture. Lee, the Developer. Musings and messages on software development. And stuff. And we come to this…. September 18, 2015. Well I guess I’ve reached the age and point in my career where I feel the urge to put together the “Let me share some thoughts with the kids” post. The milestones keep coming. You need to provide more than code to an organization. Your value should not be tied to a particular technology. The Next, Next Big Thing? July 22, 2015. So, yeah – I think you can. A “standard” archite...A REST AP...

The art of software design and development. I am not sure what I was up to with this blog. March 6, 2014. But I suspect whatever it is I wanted to do with this blog I’m doing here: http:/ developerly.com. January 23, 2010. Back in the days of Waterfall-style development (Requirements elicitation, then program design, then program development, then testing) testing came at the end, and was usually not a deliverable. So it was only natural that any schedule trimming would come from the testing bucket.

Wednesday, March 28, 2012. Why Apple Game Center is a Fail. The other day, our team was checking out the new game center features and did a quick integration with one of our games just to see how well it worked. Real time, check. Asynchronous, check. Worked beautifully. So why does no one use it? Why are we still cramming the Open Feint SDK into our games? Don't make the user create a new identity. Don't provide a standardized look and feel, or standard interface. Make the developers do the work of i...

This Is Me | A home for some of my ideas about design and development
A home for some of my ideas about design and development. Don’t Get Lost in the Weeds of Logo Design. November 21, 2013. 8220;But the logo is the first impression, the brand; it’s the first thing people see! 8220;What if I don’t like the finished logo? Unless it bears deceptive similarity to a well-known mark in a similar space or has a confusing mark, the logo is a little arbitrary. It’s an arbitrary identifier, like a barcode. Unless, of course, your logo has major problems. November 6, 2012.

Lee, the Developer. Musings and messages on software development. And stuff. The Next, Next Big Thing? July 22, 2015. I’ve not looked at Amazon’s AWS offerings in a long time. Last I looked there was EC2 and S3, with some monitoring/deployment stuff available that I’d not really looked at but knew it was there. Now there is a bewildering number of offerings. So many that when I first saw it I thought “wow, I could build an application out of this stuff”. So, yeah – I think you can. A set of Lambda. A RES...
