These programmes are designed individually for each child during a consultation and are then carried out by the parents at home. In almost every case additional help is required from other members of the family, friends or volunteers to carry out the activities, which are largely physical in nature. Some simple equipment is sometimes required for which plans are provided, and the child will need space on the floor to move around.

Advice and guidance is offered to families during face to face consultations, which are usually carried out in the family's own home since this is where most young children will generally show more typical behaviour. If they are looking for a more structured approach they will also be given a tailor made programme and taught how to carry out the exercises. Developmental Intervention offers advice to parents of young children who are not, or have been predicted to be likely to have difficulty in, reaching their development milestones. This might be due to a disability caused by brain injury or a genetic condition, or simply developmental delay with unknown origin. Intervention is most effective with children under the age of 5 or within a year or two of an accident or illness resulting in brain damage, although it can still be helpful at later stages.
