Causes of Devic’s Disease. Some scientists believe that the disease may be related to infectious agents and some environmental factors because about one half of all attacks are preceded by symptoms which indicate an infection. Some of the suspected triggers include most viral infections and tuberculosis. But at the moment of writing, there are no firm evidence to support this theory. Contact : info @ devic.org.uk.

Symptoms of Devic’s Disease. Devic’s disease is a rare but serious condition which involves damage to myelin, a tissue which surrounds the nerves in spinal cord and optic nerve which is caused by the immune system. It releases antibodies which attack myelin in spinal cord or/and optic nerve which interferes with the conduction of the nerve signals and manifests in the so-called transverse myelitis and optic neuritis. Numbness or/and weakness in limbs. Urinary or/and faecal incontinence. Pain in the eye.

Prognosis of Devic’s Disease. Just like multiple sclerosis, Devic’s disease eventually leads to worsening of the symptoms which can include permanent loss of sight and paralysis in at least one leg. The prognosis of the condition, however, is very different in people with the so-called monophasic Devic’s disease who have only one or two attacks and people who experience relapses. But most people have the latter form of the disorder which is unfortunately, fatal for many patients.
