Monday, 4 May 2015. Cyprus - April 2015. This blog is very much in need of an update, postings to Facebook seem to be occupying too much time! Photos here are of a visit to Cyprus - April 22-28, 2015. High spots were good views of Red-footed Falcons, Montagu's Harriers, and Rollers, with much more limited ones of Little Bittern and Little Crake. Some of the 16 Red-footed Falcons at Anarita. Montagu's Harriers (female and male) hunting near Anarita. Little Bittern at Ezousas. Little Crake at Ezousas.

Sunday, 15 July 2012. A Montagu's Harrier at Champion Moor, Lancashire. July 12-15, 2012:. On one occasion it perched on a broken wall and spent much time preening but most views were when in flight. It had a large area of black towards the wing tips, the arrangement of its primary wing feathers was typical (visible in the top photo), and it had a long tail and a sleek appearance. Unfortunately the bird was usually quite distant making detailed photographs difficult. Posted by Michael Foley. My NATURAL H...

Wednesday, 24 October 2012. Lesser Yellowlegs at Aldcliffe, Lancaster. October 24, 2012:. A north American bird which usually winters in the south of that continent, there have been over 400 UK records, this is about the 12th for Lancashire. The short white supercilium not extending beyond the eye, the fine beak, the rather elegant build, and yellowish legs, can be seen seen in some of these (rather distant) photos. Its yellowish legs are just visible. Posted by Michael Foley. Thursday, 18 October 2012.

Monday, 17 June 2013. Cyprus birds - Spring 2013. May 4-9, 2013:. A visit to the western side of the island yielded several interesting birds over this period. Places visited included the Asprokremnos dam area and its associated pools, Ezousas pools, Kouklea fish farm, Anarita park, Fassouri reed beds, Tunnel Beach and the adjacent cliffs, Akrotiri pools and church, Smygies, and the Teletria valley. Photographs of some of the birds seen are below. Roller, top two at Anarita, lower at Teletria. Equipment:...

Tuesday, 20 May 2014. Long overdue for an update (! But bird sightings have been relatively few during the winter. A Spring visit to Cyprus altered all this although water was very scarce and meant the birds were having a hard time. Some photos below, however. Masked Shrike at Smygies, just having bathed in a leaking trickle from the well. Cretzschmar's Bunting drinking from the leak at Smygies. Black-winged Stilt at Zakaki pool. Black-headed Bunting near Ayios Nikolaos. Lesser Kestrel at Anarita. April ...

Sunday, 21 April 2013. Arctic Terns at Brockholes Wetlands. April 19, 2013:. A small group of Arctic Terns have been hawking over the Ribbleton pool here for several days now. Their fast, agile, and unpredictable flight makes them difficult subjects for photography. Posted by Michael Foley. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Michael Foley: Bird Photographs 2010-plus ©. Saturday, 12 October 2013. Cyprus birds - Autumn 2013. September 28-October 3, 2013:. Another visit to the west of Cyprus proved worthwhile for seeing many birds, especially raptors and bee-eaters in large numbers. Very good views of Eleonora's Falcons (photos above and below) were obtained from the top of the Kensington cliff system. Cyprus, with over 200 pairs, is one of the main nesting grounds for these birds which overwinter in east Africa. At Fassouri a juvenile Red-backed Shrike was seen in the re...

Tuesday, 19 March 2013. Lesser Scaup at Brockholes Wetlands. March 15, 2013:. Today, there was a first record for the Reserve when a drake Lesser Scaup arrived at the Meadow pool overnight. There, it consorted with a small flock of Tufted Duck but could only be viewed at long range as it remained close to the reed beds on far, eastern, side of the lake. It spent most of the time diving or sleeping out on the water and had departed by the following morning. Posted by Michael Foley. Wednesday, 6 March 2013.
