Devon Daze

Tuesday, 25 May 2010. My knee . and Plymouth Aquarium! As you may or may not know, I fractured my knee a few weeks ago, so have been rather hampered between being on crutches and painkillers, and consequently remiss with catching up on my blog. Hopefully after x-rays and physio it is starting to mend - I am certainly looking forward to being able to get out and about with my camera again . Also have the ability to change colour, for camouflage purposes, they have soft bodies, except for the "beak" part&#...

Devon Daze: March 2010

http://devondaze.blogspot.com/2010_03_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 2 March 2010. Bell ringing at Exeter Cathedral. We were warned about the number of steps up to the ringing chamber, but we all managed with no casualties. There are 14 ringing bells, the largest one (the Tenor) weighs in at 72cwt! We were advised in advance to bring ear plugs, which turned out to be a timely warning . Ian explained that the bells are all mounted to the belfry framework so that the bells may rotate - this is known as "full circle" ringing. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Devon Daze: December 2009

http://devondaze.blogspot.com/2009_12_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 1 December 2009. Butterflies and . otters? Yes, a strange combination one might think! At the Dartmoor Otter and Buckfast Butterfly Sanctuary in Devon they do indeed reside together - or not actually together, first you sweat your way through the butterfly enclosure, then step with relief into the cool fresh air to see . otters! Some of the butterflies had more visible beautiful colours as well as markings . this is a Papilio Rumanzovia (yes really! And here is a black and white version below!

Devon Daze: October 2008

http://devondaze.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Friday, 31 October 2008. Wall of Death on the Hoe! A few weeks ago, there was a motorcycle rally on the Hoe, which also featured "The Wall of Death"! Followed by one of the motorcyclists - notice he is not using his hands AND has got his feet over the handlebars - let alone the fact he is also defying gravity! And as a finale . all three together! The whole show was fascinating . luckily, Bob has not been tempted to give it a try since then! Tuesday, 14 October 2008. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Cornish Ramblings: Cholesterol - is it good or bad?

http://cornishramblings.blogspot.com/2011/01/cholesterol-is-it-good-or-bad.html

Rambling feet and rambling thoughts! Monday, 24 January 2011. Cholesterol - is it good or bad? Recently I was offered the opportunity to take part in a trial of Flora pro-activ, a spread containing plant sterols which can, they say, lower LDL cholesterol by 10-15%. Well, why not, I thought, especially as it wasn't going to cost me anything, not even for the cholesterol tests I would have to have done before and after starting the four week trial. So I signed up. Total: 3.95 (recommended below 5.0). Truck...

Cornish Ramblings: April 2010

http://cornishramblings.blogspot.com/2010_04_01_archive.html

Rambling feet and rambling thoughts! Monday, 12 April 2010. Sunshine, blue skies - can this really be Dartmoor? What do you call a Cornish Hedge when it's in Devon? At the risk of offending some sensibilities, I'll have to call it a Cornish Hedge as I know of no other name for a double stone wall filled with earth, covered with grass, hedging plants and sometimes even whole trees growing on and in it. How do you get over a Cornish Hedge? Friday, 2 April 2010. King Arthur's Hall and back, that was the plan.

Cornish Ramblings: January 2010

http://cornishramblings.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Rambling feet and rambling thoughts! Tuesday, 26 January 2010. I almost always come home a little wiser from our walking days; there's always something to learn. One lesson I took from last Sunday's expedition was never to rely on the driver knowing where we are going, even if he 'has' got SatNav! What was wrong, I asked myself, in going up the hill to Luxulyan and then taking the signposted lane to Lanlivery - single track it may have been, but at least it had passing places. Cornish Ramblings: November 2010

http://cornishramblings.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html

Rambling feet and rambling thoughts! Saturday, 13 November 2010. A simple task. Pick up smallish boat and trailer from dinghy park, drive round to Millbrook, hand over boat, come home. Nice day out, take the dog, perhaps stop off for a pasty and a pint on the way back, lovely. Or not. By the time I'd walked back lots of things had happened: the police had stopped by and told him to get his triangles out (! The next bright idea was to use a trolley jack as a roller skate under the broken axle. This lo...

Rambling feet and rambling thoughts! Monday, 22 March 2010. Walking with wild ponies. We started at Foredown, and as soon as we opened the car door the pony trotted over. Nose to nose it went with Ty, pony and dog breathing each other's breath for a good five minutes before Ty turned his head away. I got the treatment next, being thoroughly investigated in all the places I could possibly have pockets (all empty, alas! Minions itself was very busy with parked cars and serious mudrunners in lycra, but we h...

Cornish Ramblings: Tamar Valley from the 'Wrong, Side - Bere Alston

http://cornishramblings.blogspot.com/2010/10/tamar-valley-from-wrong-side-bere.html

Rambling feet and rambling thoughts! Sunday, 17 October 2010. Tamar Valley from the 'Wrong, Side - Bere Alston. I like it when a ramble in the countryside throws up questions - what's this plant? I like it even more when I find some answers. Last Sunday's circular walk from Bere Alston railway station, along the Tamar on the Devon side and back was one of those days. The book didn't say. Cornish Ramblings: December 2013

http://cornishramblings.blogspot.com/2013_12_01_archive.html

Rambling feet and rambling thoughts! Sunday, 15 December 2013. One of the odd things about living on a 'border', particularly one formed by a confluence of several rivers, is that it can sometimes be quicker, easier and cheaper to cross over twice than to travel round the edge. As it was today. The plan was to walk at Mount Edgcumbe. Which is on the Cornwall side of the Tamar. So is my home in Saltash, but 20 miles or so away by road. Taking the bridge into Plymouth and the Cremyll Ferry. Down is always ...
