Ruins of Empire: To Live and Fear in Fresno
http://ruinsofempire.blogspot.com/2006/02/to-live-and-fear-in-fresno.html
Sunday, February 5, 2006. To Live and Fear in Fresno. The home of Hollywood and the vast Gay/Lesbian conspiracy? Yes, but not among the deinzens of L.A. or San Francisco. Instead it sprung up, like a weed in the places in between. Places like Fresno. In the great article by Mark Arax of the L.A. Times magazine West we can see how a community that in many ways is no different that a thousand so communities of middle America was transformed by Fear:. Yeah, we ran them around naked. So what? Fear became the...

Friday, October 12, 2007. Turkish incursion threatens only part of Iraq still at peace. Clipped from news.independent.co.uk. Turkey is threatening to send its troops into northern Iraq in pursuit of Kurdish guerrillas in a move likely to destabilise the one part of Iraq which is at peace. A statement from Mr Erdogan's office said: "The order has been given for every kind of measure to be taken [against the PKK] including, if needed, by a cross-border operation.". H/t to Prof. Cole. Under The LobsterScope: February 2005
http://underthelobsterscope.blogspot.com/2005_02_01_archive.html
Tuesday, February 1, 2005. There but for the grace of Prozac. This has been the kind of day that, some years ago, would have had me curled up in a corner wondering whether life was worth living. As part of Aflac Sales School, we had to go out and visit 15 businesses face to face that we had researched over the weekend with the goal of SCHEDULING AN APPOINTMENT for next week. That's it. We didn't have to sell anything but ourselves. What I learned today was how to handle rejection and keep smiling. I trie...

IS THIS HEAVEN: There Are No Terrorists, Only Bush
http://isthisheaven-mike.blogspot.com/2007/07/there-are-no-terrorists-only-bush.html
Sunday, July 1, 2007. There Are No Terrorists, Only Bush. The greatest purveyor of violence on earth is my own government.". 8212; Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. This planet is deeply troubled, and the main cause of it is our own government.". 8212; Former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark. This is Iowa, where all the cucumbers are strong, all the tomatoes are good looking, and all the bell peppers, are above average. We're screaming one morning on a changing table. We look up and there it is, all around us.

IS THIS HEAVEN: "Good Morning Iowa!"
http://isthisheaven-mike.blogspot.com/2007/07/good-morning-iowa.html
Friday, July 6, 2007. In the film "Sir, No Sir! There is a brief account of a clandestine anti-war radio station, "Radio First Termer," operated from a brothel in Saigon by Dave Rabbit, an active duty American service member. In my first book, "KGB," one of the characters operates an underground radio station in Sioux City, Iowa. I think part of the allure of writing fiction is that you can make things occur in the world that you want to happen. I don't know why they came over from Prague. She employs he...

IS THIS HEAVEN: Disobey The U.S.A.
http://isthisheaven-mike.blogspot.com/2007/07/disobey-usa.html
Wednesday, July 4, 2007. Disobey The U.S.A. 8220;The Trouble With Our State”. The trouble with our state. Was not civil disobedience. Which in any case was hesitant and rare. Civil disobedience was rare as kidney stone. No, rarer; it was disappearing like immigrant’s disease. You’ve heard of a war on cancer? There is no war like the plague of media. There is no war like routine. There is no war like 3 square meals. There is no war like a prevailing wind. It flows softly; whispers. 8211; our trouble.

IS THIS HEAVEN: July 2007
http://isthisheaven-mike.blogspot.com/2007_07_01_archive.html
Monday, July 9, 2007. The Cost Of Freedom. The price of democracy is eternal vigilance. Somebody said that. We have not been vigilant, we have been watching TV. We think the country runs on its own, the heavy lifting having already been done by those who gave us the minimum wage, eight-hour day and worker’s compensation, ended war. They suffered, they struggled, they died, that we might be free – that is where our thanks should go and where our examples lie – not in the military. I just kinda doubt it.

Ruins of Empire: May 2007
http://ruinsofempire.blogspot.com/2007_05_01_archive.html
Wednesday, May 30, 2007. America must remain the world's military superpower.". GOP Candidate Mitt Romney. Does the world still needs superpowers? Is it because of the Soviet threat? I guess not, the Soviet Union is gone and Russia is more concerned with border wars and NATO expansion than kick starting another Cold War. How about none of the above? The reality is that this spot is for those who cling tenaciously to the idea of Pax Americana. The time of the American Empire. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).
