Tuesday, 6 September 2011. 2 and 3 September 2011: London, Seoul, Fukuoka. The first part of our journey, a twelve hour flight with Korean Air, was fairly uneventful. The omnivores amongst us were served bibimbap. For dinner (Korean dish of some meat and vegetables which you mix with rice and some pickle substance, stir it, and enjoy) and a hybrid of rice pudding and porridge with green tea flavouring for breakfast. 19 September 2011 at 07:19. A place to lay my heart. A place to lay my heart. January 13, 2012. Friday. When I moved to Fukuoka in September 2011, I really wasn’t sure at all what I was getting myself into. I wasn’t sure why I was leaving the UK, where I had. The other day, I came across an article. I wasn’t moving closer to a chosen home, but, like the author of that article, I had somehow lost it. Home was no longer a feasible concept. Along hours of Japan’s landscape, cityscape, landscape, I realised that I had grown to love.

Tuesday, 6 September 2011. Today, we took the free shuttle bus to 日本経済大学。Okay, I admit it, I copied these kanji from a piece of paper that was given to me––but I do know how to pronounce them (ish): Nihon Keizai Daigaku. That’s the name of the university we’re staying at this year, the Japan University of Economics. 8211;–the usual suffix for Mr,Mrs,Ms or Miss––but - sensei. In the afternoon, we met the teachers at Linden Hall senior school. Linden Hall is an English immersion school, which means tha...

January 31, 2013. It’s not easy to find a really good version of the traditional Vietnamese breakfast soup. Writer, cook and supperclub host Uyen Luu shows us how to make the real thing. It’s a breakfast dish in Vietnam, invented in Hanoi the result of cross-pollination between French pot au feu and Vietnamese noodle soup with fresh herbs. Uyen is from Saigon, so this pho has more oomph than the minimal version made by most London Vietnamese, who tend to originate from the north. 20 x star anise. Add you...
