Digging Up the Ancient

This blog is about Val and Dara's archaeological adventures. They have excavated the forum of Porolissum, an ancient Roman city in beautiful Romania. They excavated there for two seasons, though Dara returned for a third, did a fourth year at Mycenae a fifth at Megiddo, and is now at Dor in Israell. Val has completed her museum studies diploma and is off to exciting new things. As ever, they're just like Indiana Jones, minus the senseless destruction of priceless artifacts.

Digging Up the Ancient: Week Three

http://digginguptheancient.blogspot.com/2013/08/week-three.html

Digging Up the Ancient. Saturday, August 3, 2013. Week Three - Monday, July 15th to Friday, July 26th. Monday: I've been moved to a new locus (the name for a specific area/layer) - this spot has a lot of mudbrick and phytolith floor - actually, the whole area has a lot of mudbrick - so much time is spent brushing and sweeping it clean for photographs. Once the pictures are taken, I can get to work scraping down the layer, and revealing more floor. Later on, at pottery reading, Elise enlists me to be her ...

Digging Up the Ancient: Actual Jerusalem Weekend

http://digginguptheancient.blogspot.com/2013/08/actual-jerusalem-weekend.html

Digging Up the Ancient. Tuesday, August 13, 2013. Friday, July 26th, cont'd. I left off last time with our arrival in Jerusalem and the long-awaited, much-appreciated showers. After that, we set off to find an early dinner/late lunch (since we skipped lunch at the Kfar to go straight to Jerusalem) and found a cafe that was still open; it's Shabbat but this place closed a little bit later than others. I had a nice iced tea and a cheese ravioli in a mushroom alfredo sauce. Saturday, July 27th. Then we wand...

Digging Up the Ancient: Week Four

http://digginguptheancient.blogspot.com/2013/08/week-four.html

Digging Up the Ancient. Tuesday, August 6, 2013. Monday, July 22nd. Nothing special for this day; my main task was to sweep down the slope, make it clean and get rid of the topsoil and fallen pottery. Tuesday, July 23rd. I was sent to the Containers again today, so it's another full day of moldy and gross cardboard boxes. It's not all bad, but it's not my first pick of places to be. Wednesday, July 24th. Thursday, July 25th. In the evening, a group of us decide we don't want Kfar food that night, so Elis...

Digging Up the Ancient: July 2012

http://digginguptheancient.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html

Digging Up the Ancient. Saturday, July 28, 2012. Second-last Week and Akko. This weekend's main trip was Masada and Dead Sea, but I opted not to do those since I'd already done that on Birthright, added to which it was already insanely hot on Masada back in June when I went, so that was another reason not to go. Instead, on Friday, I went to Akko. Saturday, July 21, 2012. Later that night, back at the kibbutz, there was a barbecue and a pool party afterward. So it was a nice night of socializing and ...

Digging Up the Ancient: August 2012

http://digginguptheancient.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html

Digging Up the Ancient. Saturday, August 4, 2012. Final Days and Hours. The final week of the dig arrives! Once we clean it up, Adam (an assistant supervisor) takes photographs from every angle, and attaches the camera to a pole so he can also get higher bird's-eye-view pictures. After that, I help him take the total station points of the stones that are around the Thingy. It will be nice to return home and see my friends and family. Thus ends my fifth year of excavation and overseas travel. Edit:. Curre...

Digging Up Stones | Researching a Family Tree in Stony Ground

Researching a Family Tree in Stony Ground. About Digging Up Stones. Shut Up, and Keep Digging. October 13, 2009. Anybody else old enough to remember “Mommy, Mommy! Q: Mommy, Mommy! To go to China! A: Shut up, and keep digging. That’s how I feel researching my family history sometimes. I keep digging and digging, and the hole gets bigger and bigger, but I never seem to arrive. It’s in the 20th century, for heaven’s sake! But I am a bulldog, and once I get a hold of a bone, I keep digging at it. Twenty yea...

Digging Up the Ancient

Digging Up the Ancient. Thursday, August 15, 2013. Week Six and Post-Season. Sunday, August 4th. Monday, August 5th. The entire day is spent working on straightening this section in 169. It was that ugly, and I am that dedicated to the art of flat planes that it's a time-consuming effort. I miss the last bucket chain because Elise has requested my aid in using the elevations instrument. Tuesday, August 6th. Wednesday, August 7th. We had one final pottery reading, but it started really late. The woman...

digging up the dirt

Digging up the dirt. Wednesday, 19 February 2014. Millions of peaches.Peaches for free. I was recently given a gift of peaches and plums from a friend who's daughter lives in Bathurst. Going on the size of this box alone you can just imagine how big the trees must have been. The peaches were white cling stone with amazing flavour. If only they were slip stones they could have been even better. The plums were mostly just eaten with a few stewed. Plum and peach crumble. Peach and almond cake. Anyhoo I thou...
