Digging up the family roots: Little Mysteries At Each Step
http://diggingupthefamilyroots.blogspot.com/2011/10/little-mysteries-at-each-step.html
Digging up the family roots. Come along on my journey to preserve my family archives and learn more about my family, preservation, genealogy, and history! Monday, October 3, 2011. Little Mysteries At Each Step. The above is a postcard from my grandpa to my aunt (his young daughter) when he was in training. Does anyone know the right things to try to get this to expose in a way (digitally) that I might be able to read the writing? The cool thing is that some of these little mysteries are solvable. I k...

Digging up the family roots. Come along on my journey to preserve my family archives and learn more about my family, preservation, genealogy, and history! Wednesday, August 31, 2011. I have long been mildly interested in the high points of my family history. For example, I have always heard that Stonewall Jackson is someone's great great great uncle down the line, and while it's unfortunate that he was with the wrong side, he's still an interesting figure, so I've thought that was cool. Some Thoughts About Racism in This Context (Happy Columbus Day). He didn't talk about the war, and I didn't ask about it. Shooting it (which they didn't). So on it went, and on they went, amid air raids and being shot at and watching planes dive bomb their fellow ships. Sidenote neat thing: I found a reference to this water bu...

Digging up the family roots. Come along on my journey to preserve my family archives and learn more about my family, preservation, genealogy, and history! Thursday, October 20, 2011. The Complications of Moving. I'm still here, but moving houses has me pretty preoccupied. In part, I'm trying to figure out how to keep my place in what I'm doing with the archiving that I have all spread out, and how to safely transport all of it. In the meantime, perhaps you'd like an interesting picture or two?
Digging up the family roots: "My Highest Ambition"

Digging up the family roots. Come along on my journey to preserve my family archives and learn more about my family, preservation, genealogy, and history! Thursday, September 22, 2011. I found this tonight and really wanted to share it. On the back Grandpa wrote, "Just a little daydreaming by 'Pop' De Vore on one of those 'uncomfortable' afternoons in the Pacific." Next step: figure out who "Pop" De Vore is and share this with him and/or his loved ones (he is the artist, not my grandpa)! I am a learner!

Tuesday, October 4, 2011. Don't Fret The Sweat- -and a $100 Visa Gift Card Giveaway. You have probably heard someone describe their son's room as "smelling like a hamster cage." And I have four. Sons It has been an eye-opening and persuasive argument against acquiring actual hamsters. The younger two are 4 and 6, and those are not the ages that contribute to the smell at our house; it is the 10.5-year-old and the 12.5-year-old, and it is only getting worse as they get older. They're nice boys,. Unilever ...

digging up the dirt
Digging up the dirt. Wednesday, 19 February 2014. Millions of peaches.Peaches for free. I was recently given a gift of peaches and plums from a friend who's daughter lives in Bathurst. Going on the size of this box alone you can just imagine how big the trees must have been. The peaches were white cling stone with amazing flavour. If only they were slip stones they could have been even better. The plums were mostly just eaten with a few stewed. Plum and peach crumble. Peach and almond cake. Anyhoo I thou...

Digging up the Past: a photographic archive from the South Wales coalfield
Welcome to my collection of photographs of the history of coal mining in South Wales. I have been taking photos and shooting cinefilm of the area for over 20 years. I grew up in the Garw Valley in the 1930's surrounded by four pits and numerous drift mines but my fascination was really sparked when I heard that the Glenafon Colliery was about be shut down and demolished in 1959. My web site will show you a world that no longer exists.
