starting out in bird photography
http://www.digiscoped.com/birdphotography.html
Starting Out In Bird Photography. As long as some basics are applied, choice of actual camera equipment is not particularly important at the end of the day. So my recommendations, in no particular order, for a camera for bird photography are;. Canon EOS 450D (Rebel Xsi) announced. 12mp pixels and 3 inch monitor and 3.5fps . This does look slightly larger and more rounded than the 400D and appears to be a great budget camera for aspiring bird photographers. It looks less of a toy than Cano...Nikon D90 12&...
Digiscoped.com - Review of Nikon 600mm AF-S
http://www.digiscoped.com/600mm.html
Nikon AF-S 600mm f4 Super Telephoto. We're not talking about namby-pamby 500mm f4s here! Unfortunately, the penalty you pay for these long telephoto prime lenses is that your minimum focus distance is substantial, 6m in this instance. A tiny bird is not likely to fill the frame from 6m away, even with 600mm and a 1.5x camera crop. You can get around this by a couple of methods, notably with the addition of extension tubes fitted between camera and the lens. There are slightly more options for heads to co...

Review of the Nikon AFD VR 80-400mm
http://www.digiscoped.com/Nikon80-400.html
The Nikon AFD VR 80-400mm f4.5 - f5.6. With a focal length coverage of 80-400mm, combined with any internal camera cropping, this is a extremely useful lens for the bird photographer. The Vibration reduction is clearly it's major feature and allows the photographer far greater ability to take handheld shots at shutter-speeds that would usually result in considerable blur from camera shake (although VR will do nothing to stop movement blur from the subject). The way I look at it, the vast majority of bird...

http://fromthefieldbook.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
From the field book. Sunday, 22 August 2010. Great Hill and Black Brook. The skies were looking very changeable today as I set off for Great Hill. I'm glad I went because a wonderful spectacle awaited - well over a hundred swallows zooming around at low levels. As I paused to admire them, I wondered if the many short-tailed youngsters amongst them knew about the migratory adventures that lay so soon ahead. I decided to return. Monday, 16 August 2010. All the photos below are from the British Dragonfly So...
from the field book: OPAL Survey
http://fromthefieldbook.blogspot.com/2010/10/opal-survey.html
From the field book. Sunday, 10 October 2010. I've recently been working with a group to complete a clean air survey organised by OPAL. Open Air Laboratories). It involved measuring tree girths, counting fungal spots on sycamore leaves and identifying lichen on oak, ash and sycamore trees. The survey doesn't take long to complete and you could easily complete it in a local park or open area. What's more all the ID charts and materials you need are provided - a great teaching resource. From the field book.

Birds, birding and other musings. Trips, Tours and Private Guiding. Mother of all Mountain Quail. Mountain Quail – Luke Tiller. Mountain Quail must be right up there with one of the most sought after species in Southern California, so when I took some friends from the east coast out birding today I had hoped that we might manage to have a brief encounter with a bird or two.
