Digital History Hacks (2005-08): March 2008
http://digitalhistoryhacks.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html
Digital History Hacks (2005-08). Methodology for the infinite archive. Tuesday, March 25, 2008. And I are putting together something new and fun for Western. Since I teach with a laptop and LCD projector, I've been thinking it would be fun to have a chat window running so students could provide backchannel commentary that could be seen by all. This might be something like IM or Twitter. I'd be happy to hear from anyone who has tried something like this. William J. Turkel. Sunday, March 23, 2008. Now I ha...

Digital History Hacks (2005-08). Methodology for the infinite archive. Wednesday, August 20, 2008. The last time that I did, however, I noticed that visitor logs tell an interesting story. These are pretty crude metrics, although more informative ones than I'm getting from, say, the sales figures for my award- winning- but- otherwise- neglected- monograph ( buy a copy today! But I don't need that level of detail about what they're getting. In The Social Life of Information. The scanning quality of 1982 o...

Digital History Hacks (2005-08). Methodology for the infinite archive. Friday, June 27, 2008. A Naive Bayesian in the Old Bailey, Part 12. Up until now, we've measured the error rates of our various learners without worrying too much about what good an error-prone machine learner actually is. By dividing the learner's responses into the four categories of hit. We can get a more nuanced picture of what it is doing when it makes a mistake. Here we look at false positives. One was this trial. Finally we can...

Digital History Hacks (2005-08). Methodology for the infinite archive. Tuesday, December 09, 2008. Some Winter Reading for Humanist Makers. Crossposted to Cliopatria and Digital History Hacks). In December 2004, I bought a copy of Joe Martin's Tabletop Machining. And begin making stuff in earnest. Since it's December again, I thought I'd put together a small list of books to help other would-be humanist makers. Alexander, Christopher. Notes on the Synthesis of Form. Digital History Hacks (2005-08): September 2006

Digital History Hacks (2005-08). Methodology for the infinite archive. Thursday, September 28, 2006. No 'Secret Syllabus' for Digital History. My colleague Rob MacDougall. Recently suggested that we teach to two syllabi, the one we give to students and a " secret. It's a fun observation and it rings true for me. It explains the asides that I bring to my survey lectures. Has been asking. Why did voyageurs practice a mock baptismal rite but not, say, a mock communion? William J. Turkel. The autumn term is ...

October 12, 2007. I don’t know if anyone’s still “reading” here – in the age of RSS, I’m not sure what that means anymore – but I thought I’d point out that I’m posting again at no great matter. I might cross-post things here, but I might not. I was probably a little too ambitious in starting this blog. The loneliness of the academic. Comment once, comment twice. An error has occurred; the feed is probably down. Try again later. A)musings of a grad student. John and belle have a blog. Old is the New New.

Laquo; what comes naturally. April 6, 2006. This may be a new blog, but I am not all that new to blogging (as some of you may know). To give more background to this blog, I’ve selected a few history posts from my other blog and posted excerpts from and links to the originals in the archives. The loneliness of the academic. Comment once, comment twice. An error has occurred; the feed is probably down. Try again later. A)musings of a grad student. John and belle have a blog. New Kid on the Hallway.

a revolution without dancing...: February 2009
http://rlablance.blogspot.com/2009_02_01_archive.html
A revolution without dancing. Is hardly a revolution worth having. Using the wonders of Google, Skyline Inc. has just released it’s plagiarism-detector 8.0. It can check Word documents, PDFs, and power point presentations, among others. Against any published source on the internet, using Google’s search algorithms. Sounds like a much better source than Turnitin.com – and it also looks like it would be one heck of a lot cheaper! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile.

A revolution without dancing. Is hardly a revolution worth having. More Challenging than I thought. I find it strange how much thought and effort I put into the title and the about me section of this blog. Upon reflection, neither look as though they were given much effort I suppose. It's odd that I would sit and contemplate both for such a long time, but then, I suppose those first impressions do mean a lot. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). More Challenging than I thought. A revolution without dancing. Is hardly a revolution worth having. Given that my internship for my public history program is already over half way complete, I thought it would be appropriate to. Share what it is that I've been doing. I'm working for the Ontario Genealogical Society (a real mouth full when you try and answer the phone! It is possible to move this machine, though it’s a tad on the cumbersome side – certainly not something to be taken lightly! Got anything you want digitized?
a revolution without dancing...: December 2008

A revolution without dancing. Is hardly a revolution worth having. I came across this photographic essay. A little while ago, and it nicely demonstrates why it is that I hope to never in my life own a diamond. This includes a (hopefully) future engagement ring. I had never really thought about the diamond industry before I took African history courses with John Laband. A small excerpt from the book. 8216;Is that what I think it is? 8217; I asked. Which examines the arms trade in numerous areas and focuse...
Pensare: November 2006
http://doroteagucciardo.blogspot.com/2006_11_01_archive.html
Discovery consists of seeing what everybody has seen and thinking what nobody else has thought." Albert Szent-Gyorgyi. Sunday, November 12, 2006. As I'm writing this, Remembrance Day has passed. I spent the morning at the local cenotaph, and along with thousands of other Canadians, I adorned a poppy on my lapel, as a gesutre of recognition and respect for the sacrifices made by our fallen soldiers. That freedom was armed conflict - it is not glorified if you remember the sacrifces made by those players.

March 23, 2015. As the article points out, smart phones are widely used and offer an opportunity to reach public audiences outside of a museum or lecture hall. The app allows more than just oral histories and includes text, video, and photos relevant to the topic. Curatescape as a larger app has allowed historical societies and museums to create linked tours and individual stories that can be accessed anywhere at any time. March 10, 2015. While the radio programs are a bit dated now, they blur the lines ...

Tools of the Trade. Friday, December 30, 2016. Maps and Timelines From Early America to the Revolution. With all of the map-making tools available, learners can present information through maps with a few selections, drags, and drops. It sounds exciting, right? I think so, too, but I'm not sure that's exactly what my high school social studies classes need. Here's a couple of examples of map-making activities with Slides. Saturday, May 10, 2014. Abraham Lincoln - The Fourteenth of April. Thought I would share the introduction to my new novel. Would love to get your feedback on it. What do you think of the concept? Does it work for you? Let me know what you think. The extraordinary document you are about to read was purportedly written by Abraham Lincoln in the last month of his life. How, I came by it, is now well known in most circles, but for those of you unacquainted with the details, I will give you a brief run down.
