An account written by the hand of ElGuapo upon the web
Digital Plates: June 2009
http://digitalplates.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html
An account written by the hand of ElGuapo upon the web. I am a former Mormon. This blog includes posts I've made to various discussion boards on the subject of Mormonism. It is not intended to promote the Mormon faith. Those who participate in the faith and prefer not to have their faith challenged are discouraged from reading. All readers are welcome to comment regardless of viewpoint. Note for clarity: my comments are always in black typeface. View my complete profile. Confessions of a Trivial Mind.

Saganist: July 2011
http://saganist.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Star Stuff Contemplating Star Stuff. Sunday, July 10, 2011. Ideological Turing Test for Atheists. I came across a very interesting Turing Test-like exercise. Today It's 15 people responding to a set of four questions. There are some atheists who were instructed to answer the questions honestly, and there are some Christians who were instructed to answer the questions as if they were atheists. The point of the exercise is, can you tell the difference? For the truly curious, here are my answers and reasoni...
Saganist: Farewell, Space Shuttle
http://saganist.blogspot.com/2011/07/farewell-space-shuttle.html
Star Stuff Contemplating Star Stuff. Thursday, July 7, 2011. Farewell, Space Shuttle. I had that LEGO space shuttle too! July 20, 2011 at 1:23 PM. I still have it, too. My mom kept it for all these years and gave it to me about a year ago. Of course my kids have totally destroyed it, but I still have the box and at least. oh, 80% of the pieces. Saganist: Primary program
http://saganist.blogspot.com/2011/09/primary-program.html
Star Stuff Contemplating Star Stuff. Sunday, September 18, 2011. But did any of the kids say anything like that? I've come to accept that this is standard fare, but come on. Far from uplifting, I find this extremely depressing. Can we ever let kids be kids? Do we really need to make every single one of them parrot doctrinal garbage when some of them are barely out of diapers? I don't like to think that my kids are being indoctrinated, and stuff like this primary program certainly doesn't ease my mind.
Saganist: April 2011

Star Stuff Contemplating Star Stuff. Sunday, April 17, 2011. After you return from the bathroom having puked your guts out, come back here. I'll wait for you. Good Let me ask you something. Do any of you unbelievers feel anything remotely like the "once-believer" described in this apparently anonymous article? Are any of you consumed with self-loathing? Seeking out increasingly dangerous indulgences to satisfy your insatiable primal urges? Yeah, me neither. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Follow me on Twitter.

Star Stuff Contemplating Star Stuff. Tuesday, May 10, 2011. On being wrong, a talk by Kathryn Schulz. This may be one of the best talks I've ever seen. Kathryn Schulz talks about being wrong. Take 20 minutes and watch the video. It's absolutely worth it. Okay, I'm reasonably certain it's worth it. Http:/ www.ted.com/talks/kathryn schulz on being wrong.html. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Saganist: November 2010
http://saganist.blogspot.com/2010_11_01_archive.html
Star Stuff Contemplating Star Stuff. Wednesday, November 17, 2010. David and his concubines. I have much more to write at some point soon, but here's a quickie someone pointed out to me yesterday. I'm a little surprised I was not aware of the relationship between these particular passages of scripture, which appear very interesting when juxtaposed. D&C 132. Is worth reading in its entirety, by the way. It gets good at about verse 50. Anyway, without further comment:. Doctrine and Covenants 132:38-39.
Saganist: Reason's Greetings in Utah
http://saganist.blogspot.com/2011/12/reasons-greetings-in-utah.html
Star Stuff Contemplating Star Stuff. Thursday, December 15, 2011. Reason's Greetings in Utah. I've never really gotten into billboard and bus campaigns. Occasionally I will read blog posts about how a new atheist or skeptical billboard has gone up in some location. The stories are usually about how a billboard was vandalized or prohibited or allowed, or about how a skeptical or atheist group has raised or is raising money to erect another one. My first thought was, "Wow, that's awesome! I just might have...
Saganist: March 2011
http://saganist.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Star Stuff Contemplating Star Stuff. Friday, March 18, 2011. Just now, I read a Mormon Times article by Orson Scott Card, called Guessing leads to knowing. I actually liked most of the article, which surprised me since I don't generally think much of OSC. He's correct that almost all human progress comes from someone who had a hunch or a guess or a crazy idea that they decided to try out. Guessing is indeed a good thing. A historical record. It simply means I don't know. I make no assertion in ei...Now, ...
Saganist: June 2010
http://saganist.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html
Star Stuff Contemplating Star Stuff. Tuesday, June 29, 2010. Bedtime conversations are the best. Sometimes my five-year old son, Alex, likes to trade beds with his younger brother. He likes to sleep in his brother's car bed. As he was yanking on an afghan to cover himself with it, I said, "Do you know who made this blanket? He said, "Mom.". I said, "Nope, not Mom.". He guessed, "Grandma? I said, "Nope, not even Grandma. It was my. He asked, "Is she still alive? And then he asked the salient question I kn...
Saganist: August 2010
http://saganist.blogspot.com/2010_08_01_archive.html
Star Stuff Contemplating Star Stuff. Sunday, August 22, 2010. Another boring Sunday. Why bother? Yet another boring Sunday, sitting through three hours of church. Honestly, it's gotten to where "enduring to the end" means staying awake for all three hours. Is this supposed to be inspiring? Is this supposed to pump me up or "recharge the batteries" so I can go out and make the world a better place and myself a better person? And I like being at least a little bit social. Questions like that have no releva...
