Is an exhibition and book of photographs. Triggered by a desire to revisit the past and explore memories attached to his alma mater, Mayo College, Ajmer, where he spent nine formative years, Prakash then expanded his interest to include 18 other boarding schools that held a similar resonance for him. What Was Home. Is an intimate tale of reminiscences by a photographer who is not only reviving his own memories but is also projecting them on to familiar spaces of ‘fear, loneliness and surprise’.

I have been living with steam trains since childhood. In the 1970’s and 80’s a meter gauge steam train brought me from Ajmer to Delhi. Its load used to be rambunctious school kids from Mayo College, heading back home for vacations. Being exclusively meant for kids, it symbolised freedom from the drudgery of school to the warm comfort of home. My interest in the Anglo-Indians grew out of my marriage to June Davy, an Anglo-Indian. June and I have been married since 1992 and I have become a part of her community. We have participated in the Anglo-Indian way of life - births, funerals, christenings, baptisms, weddings and Christmas. We enjoy old country music and the cuisine. Dileep Prakash (b. 1965) has been photographing for more than 20 years. A considerable part of Dileep’s work navigates memory, history and the passage of time. His fascination for steam locomotives began early when he travelled between his boarding school and home. By mid-1990’s most steam engines had been phased out and he photographed some of India's last steam trains (1999-2003). His project on the Anglo-Indian community ( The Anglo- Indians.
