In the streets of sacramento. THE MERCY GENERAL VOTE TO RATIFY THE CONTRACT! The membership has to ratify the contract for it to be official. We did this resoundingly with a vote by all affected CHW hospitals beginning the week of April 15, 2002, and ending April 23 with Mercy Folsom. Voting day at Mercy General was April 19th, in a meeting room adjacent to the hospital cafeteria. Conference rooms and bulletin boards will be available for union use as a result of our contract! In the streets of sacramento. I thought we'd get wage increases, better staffing, and have job security as soon as we voted for a union! Many of my co-workers have voiced this opinion and a truthful response is Only in dreamland! Voting for a union is an important step towards improved wages, better staffing, and job security but there are a lot of other steps that need to be taken as well. The following photos record our effort to demonstrate to CHW how much we want to bargain a good contract with them&...

In the streets of sacramento. What did we do? A coworker and I followed the managers as they made their rounds and questioned their statements and their right to be anti-union campaigning. Other coworkers did the same around the clock. In many departments, employees demanded that the managers and their anti-union caravan leave and in others they asked embarrassing questions. We realized at this juncture that CHW would circumvent even legal agreements in order to prevail. Gritty black and white images see...

In the streets of sacramento. Some of you may notice that for this momentous occasion i used colored film. The contract represents a great victory for CHW service employees, SEIU Local 250, and CHW, for all share the common interest of improving CHW hospitals. Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has. - -Margaret Mead. Pg 1 of 4.

In the streets of sacramento. What do we want? When do we want it? On January 18th, SEIU healthcare bargaining committee members from 17 CHW hospitals around the state met in Oakland at Local 250 headquarters before setting off by bus for CHW headquarters in San Francisco. Our goal: to deliver a letter to Lloyd Dean, CHW CEO, letting him know that we're dissatisfied with the progress of union contract negotiations. Next step: A vote on informational picketing at each of our hospitals! Our bus left Sacram...

In the streets of sacramento. Learn it and live it! Many of us can remember back to 1997, when the Local 250 campaign first started for Mercy Sacramento with house visits by organizers and house meetings at co-workers' homes. For us, it took almost five years to reach this day. For CHW employees in Mt. Shasta, it was only a journey of several months. MGH employees unite for the secret Local 250 hand signal (pre-election 2001). We could do it. Thank you, Stockton! There's the track record of other health ...

In the streets of sacramento. SEIU LOCAL 250 VISITS THE CAPITOL! Thirty-eight days past the State's budget deadline, Local 250 members from around northern California met to lobby the State Legislature. We didn't have money to hand out, but we had numbers and strong emotion about potential cuts in health care spending. Most of us have experienced cuts in health care spending in our hospital workplaces, and we know the negative consequences that brings in terms of staffing and patient care. Pg 1 of 4.
