Valentin Dinu's Coffee Break. Monday, June 30, 2008. Cloud computing is a relatively new (maybe about a year? Concept in high performance computing that refers to the use of third-party/off-site/on-demand data storage and computational resources for solving compute-intensive applications. It will be interesting to see the impact of cloud computing on biomedical research problems, such as protein folding, disease association studies and next generation sequencing. Some call it the " coolest trend.

Valentin Dinu's Coffee Break. Friday, April 10, 2009. Origins Symposium at ASU. A world-class symposium was hosted by ASU in April 2009, with a panel of Nobel laureates and speeches by an impressive list of scientists, including Stephen Hawking, Steven Pinker, Richard Dawkins and Craig Venter. I was particularly impressed by Venter's talk, and the progress made towards synthetic genomes. The videos are available for playback from the symposium website. Posted by Valentin Dinu @ 7:45 PM.

It was nice to see an uptick in translational bioinformatics related topics and lectures. Atul Butte and Russ Altman had a great lecture covering some of the reasons why translational bioinformatics is an exciting area of research and also some of the challenges encountered.
