Gardening for the People. The First Ripe Tomato of the 2012 Growing Season. The First Ripe Tomato of the 2012 Growing Season. 8230;is ‘Hahms Gelbe Topftomate.’. In a surprise upset, this pretty little dwarf plant beat out the usual top competitors, ‘Whippersnapper’. And ‘Ditmarsher.’. It’s a true winner as I started the seeds at the same time and planted them out together, too. I am amazed. Both of the other varieties have fruit that are VERY close to ripe so we should be enjoying them any day now. 1 Yes...

Fussiology: A visit to Humber Nurseries
http://fussiology.blogspot.com/2012/05/visit-to-humber-nurseries.html
Sunday, 6 May 2012. A visit to Humber Nurseries. Spring is returning to Ontario, and with it my urge to garden, grow and generally think about all things plant-y. Last weekend we made our annual trip down to Brampton for family visiting, a trip that has gotten even better since I realized that one of the largest nurseries in the province is only 15 minutes from our hotel! I had great success during last year's. Visit and was exited to see what I would find this year. Inside the tropical house! Now, I'm a...

Fussiology: October 2011

Sunday, 30 October 2011. A little bit of luck. I have all of my mesembs under one 2 bulb, 24" fluorescent light fixture. You can fit a lot of 'thops in a small space, but things are really tight under there right now. I was barely able to fit everything back inside under the lights once the weather started cooling down. If some plants hadn't died over the summer I would have been in a real pickle. Needless to say I've been coveting this:. The three-tiered one of course. I might have squealed. Sorry for t...

Thursday, 11 August 2011. Lithops aucampiae var. aucampiae. This was one of my very first lithops, one that I got from my Mesemb Mentor back in March. Right away I noticed he was starting to shrivel and hopefully change his leaves. Ever since I have been patiently waiting, patiently withholding water, and worrying no small amount. My mentor encouraged patience and calmed my panic that he was shriveling due to impending death. Finally a few days ago he was properly dry and looked like this:. And here is a...

Fussiology: August 2012

Wednesday, 22 August 2012. So it hasn't been a very plant-y or blog-y summer. Between my thesis, cottaging, camping and the sadness from losing 2/3 of my lithops collection this spring, I just haven't had the heart to blog :(. On the positive side, I have a ton of lithops, mesemb and caudiciform seedlings just waiting to be planted. So why haven't I planted them yet? My local nursery finally got in some lithops plants this week (after a year and a half of waiting! I did bring my camera with me and took s...

Fussiology: March 2012

Tuesday, 20 March 2012. We were eating supper the other day when THV excitedly pointed out that two nearby plants weren't dead. So much faith in my horticultural abilities that boy has :). I'm thankful I was warned by the lovely lady who started these seedlings for me that Jatropha podagrica. Loses it's leaves in the winter. I was a bit surprised they did it while still so young and likely would have tossed them out at Christmas time without the advice. Tuesday, 13 March 2012. Can't wait until I can put ...

Wednesday, 9 May 2012. A visit to Humber Nurseries: the lithops section. The title of this post is kinda misleading, since there really wasn't a lithops section so much as a tray of sad, over-watered 'thops. I didn't find any gems that I wanted to risk my money on this year, although looking at the picture I kinda wish I had picked up the middle one on the far right row. There was also this bigger pot, with a multi-headed clump:. Sunday, 6 May 2012. A visit to Humber Nurseries. Inside the tropical house!
