Feasting in the Skagit foodshed. Discovering the Skagit bounty. I just fell off the face of the earth! Not really, but life has taken a turn and I’ve become a part-time Whatcom resident. Keith and I have embarked on the [ad]venture of taking over his parents’ candy shop and cafe up in Birch Bay. It’s pretty much the off season right now, but we have a lot of work to do behind the scenes. Follow along at The CShop blog. Laquo; 20th Century Cake. Date : October 16, 2009. Dog Days | Feasting in the Skagit foodshed

Feasting in the Skagit foodshed. Discovering the Skagit bounty. We had a great 3 days sailing and hiking around Sucia Island. Click on Dax for the rest of the photos on Flickr. I’ve caught up with work and most of my sleep, had scintillating discussion at our monthly Saukrates Cafe. Did most of the laundry, watered the garden, planted out some of the overgrown transplants, and generally played catch up around here. Blogging will resume shortly. But first, the dog story. Maija had no collar (she’d b...

Feasting in the Skagit foodshed. Discovering the Skagit bounty. The best bagels to be had, outside of your own kitchen of course, are at The Bagelry. Laquo; Yay or nay? Date : May 30, 2009. Just found your blog today. The Bagelry makes the best bagels! Whenever we pass through Bellingham, we stop. Sometimes we’ll even road-trip up there, especially for the bagels. Favorite bagel? Garlic with lox spread. Yummy, but requiring mouthwash afterward if I’m going to be in company. 🙂. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

May 26, 2009. Growing Challenge Check In #1. Filed under: Growing Challenge. 8212; Saara @ 18:54. So I signed up for Melinda’s Growing Challenge from Seed to Seed. The old saved seed that I most recently planted is marigolds. If they ever come up, I’ll be saving seed from the marigolds. Besides being vibrant in the garden and nice cut flowers for the table, marigolds are said to deter harmful nematodes and act as a trap crop for aphids. I’m a big believer in companion planting. Them first and planted the...

May 16, 2008. Outside the garden in May. 8212; Saara @ 15:16. The raspberries are leafing out. As you can see, I don’t prune them to the ground. These are an everbearing variety and they do much better with this treatment. These are red currants that I started from cuttings from my mom’s plants. They’re doing great for their first year! I don’t expect any fruit yet though. Here’s a better view of how large some of the plants got this spring with all the rain. Out the driveway we planted hops bines! These...
