She grew up in east Tennessee, where her bedroom windows were partially obscured by flowering shrubs and her bedroom walls. Obscured by amphibian posters. Miles graduated college with a degree in biology. After teaching biology and chemistry labs for some time, she became a full-time research assistant in a laboratory at Vanderbilt University (her current job).
