My Musings, Thoughts and Deliberations. Please add your own. Articles posted by Samuel Buckman. Another thing about research ethics…. October 20, 2015. November 1, 2015. I’m posting the essay I wrote for the final assignment. Enjoy! Research Ethics in Human Subjects. However, there is a larger problem in the way that we evaluate the ethics of trials that applies even when participants in a trial. That doesn’t seem just to me. Goldacre, B. (2013). My Musings, Thoughts and Deliberations. Please add your own. Big Science – Is It Worth It? Big Science – Is It Worth It? October 5, 2015. Well, the CERN debate was fun. Unfortunately, I think that the format was limited, in that when debating as part of such a large group, it is difficult to plan and reach consensus, and as a result the arguments didn’t tie in together very well. So here’s the situation as I see it. Loss for their home country. And there are surely cheaper ways to gain diplomatic bro...

My Musings, Thoughts and Deliberations. Please add your own. October 5, 2015. October 5, 2015. So, last week we talked about mental illness. Even the label is controversial, in a way that surprised me. I rather went off on a tangent when we were talking about schizophrenia. Everyone is, of course, familiar with the idea of ‘What if my perceptions do not correspond to an external world? What if my world isn’t real? Big Science – Is It Worth It? Sugar | My Musings, Thoughts and Deliberations

My Musings, Thoughts and Deliberations. Please add your own. October 14, 2015. Some semi-readable venting follows-. For those who have not seen it, it starts of promising to explain the mystery of sugar – why do scientists suddenly believe it is so bad for us? It then proceeds, not to epidemiology, nor biology, nor even to some over-simplified chemistry. No, it goes straight to publicly humiliating some overweight people because they have so much sugar in their diet. WTF? What’s that, somebody want...

Week 11-Addictions | mazzscischol
https://mazzscischol.wordpress.com/2015/10/12/week-11-addictions
Addictions involve automatic behaviours that attempt to return the body to a state of mental stimulation, easing withdrawal symptoms at the same time. So is sugar an addictive substance? I’ve loved sugar from childhood up until around 2 3 years ago, when I felt dizzy and got a dry mouth and had frequent urination after eating way too many lollies. I consulted Dr. google, who came up with an answer that matched my symptoms perfectly- diabetes! Sure, I wouldn’t consume the sugar when in the presence ...

A SCISCHOL 102 Blog. GMOs: They aren’t as bad as you think. October 7, 2015. October 8, 2015. Have been getting a lot of bad publicity in the media lately. It is a matter than generates incredibly strong opinions in people, but unfortunately, a lot of the information you will find online about the topic is misleading. As a result, it can be difficult to know what we should be listening to so we can make our own informed opinions. What is a Genetically Modified Organism (GMO)? But I understand that it isn...

Never heard of Science scholars? This is a group of high-achieving undergraduate students passionate about science. Week 10- GM plants, agriculture, and beliefs | mazzscischol

Week 10- GM plants, agriculture, and beliefs. This week we had a professor from chemistry, and a UC Davis Plant geneticist. What was interesting was the Plant geneticist had previously done a TED talk. We were told to choose and defend one of five stances regarding genetically modified organisms in NZ:. I) Research on genetically modified organisms should be prioritised and approved plants should be grown in NZ. Iii) 100% Pure NZ should have allow no genetically modified organisms at all. As a country wi...

Week 4- Critical thinking, Science, and Medical Ethics. This week the session was hosted by 2 philosophy experts- in fact, I attend the classes of one of them! Although I thought that his first lecture (in the class I take) was boring, I changed my mind after attending this session. He was able to talk non-stop for nearly 2 hours while keeping the whole conversation very entertaining. I listen to Freakonomics radio,. One of the topics covered in a recent-ish podcast was the topic of Homo economicus.

Week 5- The Perfect Storm. Sorry about the late post; the last two weeks were quite busy but everything is fine now. In week 5, we learned about the mathematical and computational models that model the climate around the earth. The earth is split into separate grids, and each grid has its conditions (humidity, temperature, precipitation) modeled. This is not great because the weather extremes are harder to prepare for. Typhoon Haiyan- an extreme weather event. In November 2013, Typhoon Haiyan got to pass...

Week 8- Big Science. This week, we had a great talk from Jim Metson, Chief Science Advisor for the ministry of business and employment. We were told to estimate the costs of things such as an academic’s salary throughout their life time, costs for the repairs to the Large Hadron Collider, and costs of the Marsden fund per year. One of the big science projects that NZ is funding is the Square kilometer Array. Here is a pleasant image of space for your viewing pleasure:. All credits to hubble telescope.

August 2, 2015. August 2, 2015. Week 2 is cryptography! This is a topic I really like because the more detailed it gets, the more fascinating it is. The article will be shorter than the first one though- the workload for the semester is picking up. We were given a brief overview of some fields of cryptography to start with, including:. The Onion Router (TOR)-. You may have noticed that many sites now have https:/. This is much more difficult. Although users of bitcoin are heavily promoting its usefulness...
