Dispatches from a DPhil

Dispatches from a DPhil. Sunday, 3 April 2011. What would you rescue first in a fire? Put yourself in this position: you come back after a weekend away. Your housemate meets you at the door with some bad news – the house has been burgled. Your computer’s gone. What’s the firs thing that comes to mind? Yup – your thesis. My desktop had gone, and the extremely ancient laptop, and the only thing I could think of was, where’s my portable hard drive? Gone too, as it turned out. Three copies of your thesis?

Dispatches from a DPhil: Publish or be damned

http://dispatchesfromadphil.blogspot.com/2009/03/publish-or-be-damned.html

Dispatches from a DPhil. Friday, 20 March 2009. Publish or be damned. One of the foci of STORIES this year was publication. We invited three speakers, each of whom is on an editorial board of a journal, has edited a journal, or in one case (and it was naturally our own department’s Professor Geoffrey Walford) edits, sits on boards, reviews, and has published every kind of work imaginable. The real key to getting published though, the experts tell us, is this: do good quality research and write it up well.

Dispatches from a DPhil: June 2009

http://dispatchesfromadphil.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Dispatches from a DPhil. Thursday, 4 June 2009. How to write a methodology section. As I sit in front of my computer desperately trying to put together a methodology section for my 'transfer of status' paper, which is a 10,000 word document designed to prove that I really do have something which looks like a doctoral project, I'm led to wonder why there isn't a convenient guide on how to write your methodology section. It was made more complicated by the fact that I am using 'mixed methods', as the well-...

Dispatches from a DPhil: Publish or be damned Mark II

http://dispatchesfromadphil.blogspot.com/2009/05/publish-or-be-damned-mark-ii.html

Dispatches from a DPhil. Saturday, 23 May 2009. Publish or be damned Mark II. So having decided to take my own advice, I set about trying to find somewhere that I could flex my reviewing muscles, half-way between the publications aimed at the teaching professions, which I already review for (and which 'don't count' as academic publications, as we learned from Geoffrey Walford below), and the scary world of real academic publishing. What I found was ESCalate,. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Dispatches from a DPhil: November 2008

http://dispatchesfromadphil.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Dispatches from a DPhil. Wednesday, 5 November 2008. Finding the literature - never mind reviewing it. The first part of any research project appears to be extensive reading on and around your topic. Or any topic which might be vaguely related or in fact interesting in some way, or indeed extensive reading around a topic which is in no way related to your doctorate but looks jolly interesting, and it was okay to spend all day reading these two novels, wasn't it? In fact, tomorrow I will be at Cambridge A...

Dispatches From Middle Age

Dispatches From Middle Age. Sunday, January 21, 2018. Thought I'd Drop By . So For reasons simple and not, I've not posted here in four months. Part of me dislikes even this much exposure (20 eyeballs reading a post) and to come back now is to get away with something. It's akin to singing in the shower, dancing in your room, you get the idea, right? But having defined myself as a writer; a writer has to write. Between the last time I posted and today have been plenty of trials and tribulations, shoes dro...

Dispatches From 3:15 AM

Dispatches From 3:15 AM. Saturday, October 5, 2013. I jumped into the Ryanverse at the tail end of what I consider to be the series prime. I picked up a dog eared copy of my father’s paperback version of The Sum of All Fears, not realizing that it starred the main character from the movie The Hunt for Red October, or that it was the 4. Be warned: the next few paragraphs are spoilers for books from fifteen years ago.). Jack Ryan inadvertently becoming the President of the United States (! I’m ignori...

dispatchesfromabsurdia | Just another WordPress.com site

Just another WordPress.com site. A poem written in the wake of my first travels. February 23, 2012. I am in the here and now. And I create art. Art is my creation. I am a man. My force is indomitable. My veins pulse with potential. I am the spearhead. Into the land of possibilities. And fear will not stop me. Because I have shed the fear. Like an unnecessary garment. On a hot sunny day. Because I can do anything. As soon as I am aware of my omnipotence. The garden of eden is yours. We are the earth.
