Dispatches from Xanadu

The only constant is that everything changes. I've discovered something in the past month (when I wasn't posting, apologies): I have never really known what it meant to be American. But it was not until this Tuesday that I understood what that meant. When I watched Barack Obama speak to the nation after the election, I felt more American than I ever have. Here was a half-white, half-black man, born in Hawaii, raised in Indonesia, who truly understood the American indentity. In a statement on the bank's W...

Dispatches from Xanadu: September 2008

http://www.dispatchesfromxanadu.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

I've received calls from concerned family members about the impending credit apocalypse supposedly about to swallow the world in frozen credit lines and move economic growth to a standstill. And others fear that this entire debacle will ultimately lead to the death of free-market capitalism, once and for all. Pundits, politicians, bankers, investors all spin the tale the way they want: good news, bad news, prophetic visions of a global economy or dystopian nightmare of bread lines and sweeping poverty.

The Icelandic government has seized control of Kaupthing Bank in the midst of a financial quagmire in Iceland. The entire board of directors of Iceland's largest bank have resigned; replaced by the country's Financial Services Authority. They will have the full power of the board to resolve. He seemed to place the blame on the Icelandic government, particularly its decision to acquire a 75 percent stake in Glitnir. Don't be distracted by the man behind the curtain. Look to the right. Nope, keep looki...

Dispatches from Xanadu: August 2008

http://www.dispatchesfromxanadu.blogspot.com/2008_08_01_archive.html

In a currency fight, the American dollar would land some easy punches on the peso, the dinar and the ruble and could easily dust off any African or South American denomination, including the — unfortunately named — Costa Rican Colon. But nowadays, that's where the American dominance ends. In the semifinals, the British pound or the European Central Bank-backed Euro would shred what value the dollar has left. And for Americans traveling abroad, this has serious consequences. Or disaffected East Germans.

Dispatches from Down Under -

Dispatches from Down Under is a blog about life, love, the universe, and those random acts of kookiness that make you go hmmm . It’s authored by a wee Welshman (MG) who’s careering towards the big four-oh, and, as he’s contemplating his fifth decade of existence, he juggles with the idea of the looming milestone. Take a pew, pour yourself a large one, and grab some popcorn as MG dissects his amazing midlife crisis.
